Guys. What do you think of wearing boat shoes/deck shoes without socks? Are they a good dress up shoe?

Back in 85, which was the year I started JR. High, I seen a lot of boys wear boat shoes without socks. I had quite a few deck shoes (or better known as decks) and I never wear socks in them. Anybody out there like deck shoes?

Yeah, those are more of a casual shoe.

I remember the guy from Pretty in Pink, James Spader, wearing those in the high school scenes...he had on those white baggy pants with that blazer & he wore those boat shoes with no socks!
I had that image perfect in my head when I read your question and just felt compelled to answer!

Do you remember young men's 'deck pants' being popular early 60s?

Guys, did any of you wear them? Didn't they have a 'sailors' look to them, a rope tie for a belt? I may be mistaken, just wondered if anyone remembered them. My brothers had them, they were navy blue with a white rope for belt, flared somewhat, and I thought they were not full length pants, similar to length capri pants are today. My brothers, both 13 or 14 yrs old, and also wore white deck shoes, those canvas slip ons that you can still find. These pants and shoes were all the rage back then, the days of the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. So anyone remember them?

I recall "beach bum" shorts that fit that description. They were popular during the " Beach Movie" era with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. Usually you saw the surfer guys earning them.

Sailors did wear that style during the 16th-17th century but the deck shoes were move of an invention since the vulcanization of rubber. They added canvas and you ended up with the father of the tennis shoe.

The early 60's were my favorite time since it was when I was going past "playing Army" and started getting very interested in girls. I remember very tight ankled Levis jeans with white socks and either brown penny-loafers or pointed toed snap on "cockroach killer" shoes. Also wore a skinny little belt that could double as a fan belt on your car if needed.

What kind of skate gear should I buy?

I am a 13 YO boy and some of my friends skate. I think it looks fun and I want to learn how to. I'm 5'7 and wear size 12-13 shoe. Should I buy a complete or should I build my own? What kind of shoes should I buy? Where should I buy the deck and the trucks and stuff?

First thing is that you want to make sure that you buy from a local skateshop. Don't buy from Zumiez or CCS or else you're hurting your local skate scene. If you're just starting out and don't want to be too serious about skating yet, it might be a good idea to buy a complete for a fairly cheap price. However, you have big feet which means you should at least be riding a size 8 board, preferably bigger. Large sizes might be hard to find in pre-built complete boards so you may have to make your own. If you make your own board and you want it to be cheap, I would recommend buying the shop's decks and other equipment because you're still supporting a legit company. If you buy shop brand (make sure it's a locally owned skateshop), the stuff may not look as cool and won't have any pro's names on it, but it will work just as well and be about $10-$20 cheaper.

Build me a deck please?

Bride in proper deck shoes, St. Katharine Docks, London (right). We bought the chair at Nauticalia in Shepperton on our way to London by boat for our honeymoon, which was why the chair was on the boat. I wanted a similar chair since my "Lighthouse Depot" obsession days some 12 years ago, but even my carpenter-uncles couldn't build it. One of my uncles approached a Furniture House for them to build it but they said they'd have to make a pattern first, and we'd have to order a dozen chairs or so.

It’s also my birthday month so when he asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said, a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Dyson has these cool gadgets, like that bladeless fan. He thought I wasn’t serious. There is that scene in “Father of the Bride” when the bride cried because her fiancé gave her a blender. Something about what’s perceived as women’s roles. I’m not sensitive about this at all. I mean, I’m one who would rather receive presents I could use and I would prefer a new hoover, for example, over a limited edition cuckoo clock (if you know how excessive my in-laws are in giving presents, you would understand – they are way too kind and I’m frustrated trying to make room – thank God for charities that collect the bags straight from your doorstep!)
