My girlfriend wears a size 10 and when I went to buy her gift, people looked at me weird. I bought her a wedge shoe for her birthday.

Size 10 is quite standard these days, with the average being 8.5. Eleven is fairly big, but not uncommon.
Size 12 is exceptionally large and it can be hard to find shoes, though many tall women or women with kids wear this size. As a guy, I wear the equivalent of a womens 11.5 or 12, and it's not unusual for tall girls to equal me, or even defeat me by a hair - though their feet are usually narrower than mine.

I am 14 and my foot size is 10.5, it's really difficult for me to find shoes here in Hong Kong even if it means wearing men shoes. Which sometimes doesn't look bad at all. Except that when those who works in the store asks what size do you want, and sometimes it hurts when they have that "you're kidding, right?" look on their face.
I get used to that now since came to think about it, a Chinese school girl with this kind of size is not that obvious in here.
But it bugs me when I keep noticing I am hitting the largest shoe size in my region, I really want to know if it is equal as hard to find shoes in this size out there as it is in HK? Or maybe sharing some experience? thx .

I know! I also have size 10.5 feet, but I really love basketball shoes, so yes I do buy many men's shoes, especially ones like Air Jordan's and such. So just embrace it; also a tip: when you need heels, it's easiest to just find size 11s and then they'll be a bit more roomy anyways. Believe me, it's OK. Also, try shoes.com. They have most shoes up to size 11 and 10.5.

Shoes are all the same size. So a size 10 male will be the same as a size 10 female :)
