Girls Tap Dance Shoes

When I took tap, we just wore regular clothes that we were comfortable in with our tap shoes! I recently got a job where I will be teaching 4-6 year old girls the basics of tap. They need to be uniformed. What do they traditionally wear for tap classes? Maybe we were taught the wrong way back in the good ol' days. Help me please if you can.

at my studio we wore:

black leotards (whatever kind)
pink, tan, or black tights
hair in a ponytail or bun
black or pink skirt
black shoes

Any suggestions? Are Payless shoes OK for a 4 year old in ballet and tap for the first time? She needs leather ballet shoes and tap shoes. I know that Payless dance are not good for serious dancers, but are they OK for a preschooler? If not, do you have a recommendation?
Almost forgot--there is no "store" where she takes lessons. She's taking lessons from a part-time instructor on a military base.

yes, that's where i bought my flat ballet shoes for a couple years when i first started. if she continues dancing, and gets better, you will need better shoes. my fave dance company is discount dance. awesome stuff, at awesome prices. here's a link for kids shoes from the company. much better than payless, but it doesn't matter. either is fine. typ in the keycode 2030C for a good pair for her.

I've been dancing for quite a few years and I enjoy it, but some of the girls in my class are just plain rude. I hate it and have been thinking about quitting. If this doesn't sound dumb enough, I had white tap shoes while the rest had black, then they made fun of me for having the only white pair. Plus its like they are so competitive instead of just having fun. Has or is anyone else experiencing this? Some teenage girls are just awful. I hate this stage.

Do not stop doing what you like to do just because theses girls are being rude to you. You no thy could be jealous of you as well, and hoping you do quit, for your better then thy are. Some of theses girls may not mean to be that way but are going alone with someone thy no just to fit in with them.As for as your shoes goes i would not care what thy say about them as long as you like them, for if you go in get a black pair thy will no that thy got to you. So do not let that happen, You stay to being you and care less for what thy may half to say.

Is it possible for the taps on a shoe to weaken and loose its sound? ive had my shoes for nearly 6 years now and they dont produce as much sound as the other girls shoes do. and theirs are newer. i have to stomp my feet on the ground and tap really hard which causes scuffs but its the only way i dont get drowned out by the other (theres only 3 of us total and the teacher dances with us sometimes) dancers.

im thinking about buying new taps for the shoe since the shoe itself is still okay and all...

You have to be sure not to get your taps dirty. dirt will actually scratch the surface of the tap and it loses its sound. just look at them, you will see the dirt and scratches. just replace the taps. those are the cheap part. happy tapping!
