The North Face backpacks are great for school...Especially the Jester line. They have them at ebags.com, amazon.com, and places like Dick's Sporting Goods. I just got the grey/pink one. They're around $70, I think....
As for totes to carry books around in between classes, Abercrombie/Hollister/A&F havesome good ones that are big enough. Regular price is $25-40 (depending on the store: A&F or Abercrombie) but on sale you can get them for $25 or less.

Recently I've been to Aeropostale and other stores for some back to school shopping. There were some messenger bags displayed at the stores. Does that mean its okay to maybe put aside that Jansport backpack or tote bag for a while and let the messeger bag take the spotlight??

Definitely! Messengers are the perfect fall bag. Totes are better for spring/summer. Messengers are more rustic and tend to go better with fall colors. A plaid messenger bag would be really cute.

I'm not allowed to carry back packs on my back for health reasons.
I was thinking of a messenger bag but I'm unsure if those will fit all the text books, and all your extras, you need to bring home.
I know what backpack I want, I just meant what type.
I use a big tote bag. It fits all my stuff.
I don't want a bookbag this year so I was hoping to get a big purse to carry my books and pencils. What stores sell good quality bags?

Do most kids love to dump their bags on the floor and head straight for the telly and just leave mum to unpack the bags??
Create a routine/new habits so your kids can help you. Even better if they are starting school teach them great habits from the start. Remember Mum if you do it for them, they will expect you to continue doing it, they are perfectly able to unpack their own bag. My kids have followed the routine below since they each started prep, they have learnt their bag is their responsibility.
This is our afternoon routine:
Remove shoes and place on shoe rack in garage. Take off socks while still in the garage as they are usually filled with sand and bark which I don’t want through the house.
