Most carpenters work with wood... there are levels of carpentery. Contact your local "carpenters union" and talk to them about taking an entry test that will measure whether or not you're ready to begin a carpentry career. If you're not then they will point you in the right direction for training, if you are then they will help you find a job as an apprentice. Apprentice and do the grunt work for the lowest pay for a few years working under a regular carpenter, then you'll move up to a regular carpenter and train under a "master carpenter", then finally you'll be able to take the reigns... but it takes years of hard work and you must provide QUALITY work, remember, people can buy pre-made cabinets from home depot, you're work will have to hold up past those cheap slap together jobs.

I have three ASMET degrees and am thinking about going for a BSMET, this is not a theory based ME degree it is a Bachelor of Science Mechanical engineering technology degree.
There aren't any jobs right now and am laid off so i was thinking it might be a good time to do this, here are some things you should know:
1. I am 41 yrs old
2. I spent the first 15 years of my adult life as a cabinet/furniture maker and business owner.
3. I graduated in 2008 cum laude @ 40yrs old.
4. My intention was to become a mechanical designer but with the economy their are no jobs for entry level designers, and I don't think their will be anytime soon.
So the question is:
1. Is there security and jobs if you have a BSMET, or are employers looking BSME degrees.
2. If I don't go back to school and hang tight at some point I think I can get an entry level position at around $15 and within a year or two make about $30hr. (have done research). And have seen jobs posted for 80k-90k with 10 years experience.
3. Of course their are no guaranties on point #2.
4. I would be 44-45yrs when graduated would that be an advantage or disadvantage. experience wise i would be up against 20ish year olds, of course I would have more "life experience".
What do you think?
I would be attending University of Cincinnati OCAS campus.
what type of mechanical designer? I, myself am a ME in the environmental engineering industry. My fellow students went into the systems engineering and also HVAC industry. Being a mechanical engineer should already leave you with many options, but I see the tendency to lean towards one discipline and have one mind set. I'd say keep your options and mind open to the new ideas. Sustainability seems to be the current trend. With your BSME degree you should be able to pull in 30$ easy. and remember to take the FE exam, that is always a plus.

Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers Blog: 6' Bench on Schedule ...
I don't consider myself to be a very compulsive person but in some ways I guess I can be. When something is not right in my work, I do everything that I can to make it right. I had to throw out the first crest rail that I made for this bench. I rushed the drilling and neglected to look at my notes from past jobs. This resulted in a rail that would have been passable but would not have given the spindles the grace that they should have. So, out came the glue-up jig again and I made a new one. Then.... after the bench had its first coat of oil on, I noticed some blemishes due to incomplete sanding on the seat. (many times things are visible after oiling that are not visible before) I consulted some friends about the look who said it was fine but I really hate to let things like that go. I really noticed it, so last night I took the whole seat down to bare wood again with 40grit paper and bringing it back to 220. It had to be done last...
