We purchased a computer program for our school. Where should it be coded in Quickbooks?
A young child's view of our Computer Lab

Hello, I work at a small private school. We recently purchased a math program for our computer lab, which cost us $12,000. I wanted to post a question here and ask accounting professionals how I should code this purchase in Quickbooks. We have a GL account called 'computer lab' under cost of goods sold. Should it be coded there or should it be considered as fixed asset since it's more than $1,000? but if so, I am not sure which fixed asset account should be most appropriate, we have computer equipment, furniture & fixture, Office equip, leasehold improvements & school equip under fixed assets, is a computer program a computer equipment??? If anyone could give me advice, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for taking your time to read my question.

If you haven't used your 179 depreciation deduction for the year, that would would most likely be the best way to account for the purchase.

You could either record it as a fixed asset and depreciate the full amount with your yearly tax adjustments, or post it directly to an expense account and just keep the information necessary for your tax accountant.

I'm not sure how you've got your CoA set up that you'd have COGS accounts for a school... but that could be a legitimate category for such a program as well.

In short, without a lot more information, the only honest answer is that "it depends".

lab mix chewing problem?
GHCA's Computer Lab (empty)

I have a lab Schnauzer mix and it is an awesome little dog. however the one problem that i have is that it has a terrible habit of chewing on random wooden objects. this list includes, a coffee table, dinner table chair legs, window moldings, computer table legs and many other things. I believed it to be a problem that could easily be fixed by putting him in a crate to sleep in and to contain him in when i go to school however he still does this occasionally when i leave the room for a few seconds... and he even has started chewing on the outdoor plastic furniture! I have bought countless bones, and plastic toys but still he reverts to the wood. Does anybody have any tips or anything to assist me? does it matter that he is not neutered?

I would get some bitter apple spray...it can be found at most pet shops it helps prevent chewing on wooden objects. you may want to try that...most dogs chew out of boredom...make sure to exercise your high energy dog every day.

We are now in the 3rd qtr of school, and I STILL don't have a classroom. Advice from other teachers, please!!?
workplace room with computers in row

Sorry this is a bit long but it's easy to follow. Okay, a little background. I was hired as a first grade teacher back at the end of July. Our school started August 3rd. I was told AFTER being hired (and contracted) that my portable classroom did not have electricity, and that it would be a few weeks before it was run to the portable buildings. The other teacher in the same predicament got hired before me and holds her class in the science lab. It is now January 11 and we have been in school over 5 months. Second semester and third quarter have begun. There is still no electricity for my classroom. Back in September, I brought my stuff up, put my room together and am ready to go (except they have yet to provide furniture, either, so there are no desks, tables or a file cabinet). While this is going on, I also do have an assigned student roll. I have 18 kids on my class roll...they are peppered into 5 other 1st grade classrooms. I visit each class once a day (usually...if they have computer or library, I don't see them at all) so I essentially teach MY students each subject one time or less a week. I am held 100% accountable for them, their grades, their DIBELS, etc. I've been pulled to substitute in my grade level as well as other grade levels, but am still responsible for my kids. While I don't mind doing whatever is asked of me, I can't see HOW I can be held accountable for 'my' students in this situation. I just want to quit. I'm looking into private schools now and just mailed out some resumes. But until then, does anyone have any advice? I'm ready to just walk out.

I hope you joined your union when you began working. You need to call them immediately. Check your contract. See what the job description is as listed in your contract. Also check to see what is required in the event that you want to quit. Many teaching contracts do not allow you to quit without some sort of penalty. Your union will be able to give you the best advice. They will advise you on what your rights and options are. Worst case scenario would be to stick it out for this year then put in for a transfer next year. It doesn't seem as if this school has any sense of urgency or respect for your time and capabilities.

Jobs that don't require one to be computer savvy or do a lot of heavy lifting.?
Sts. Peter and Paul School - computer lab

Hey y'all, this is a long shot, but I could use some more opinions on it. My best friend is really unhappy right now. She's dyslexic so she's always struggled a bit with jobs that require reading, typing, working on a cash register, etc... so she's working a graveyard shift as a stocker in a Wal Mart. She really hates her job. She's a really dependable, responsible, reliable employee so she's been given tasks like scanning all of the labels on the boxes and unloading the truck and it requires her to lift big, heavy furniture all night long. She's burnt out but we're having a hard time figuring out what job would be a good fit for her. She's got a high school diploma with a special focus in photography. She's good with a camera and knows how to develop film (she had a job in a photo lab for a while and loved it, but she was laid off since unfortunately, that photo lab was in a Kmart that was closed). Photo jobs are rare though, so we're looking for something more generalized

She should go to a temporary agency. They will sit down with her and figure out what she'd be good at.

When purchasing computer training furniture, the buyer needs to consider several factors to ensure that a good decision is made before a contract with a vendor is signed. Though everyone should have proper equipment, this is especially important for the young and growing bodies of children. Educational institutions have a responsibility to the students to provide school computer lab furniture that relieves stress on the body's musculoskeletal system. The field of study that analyzes such stresses and seeks methods of relieving them is called ergonomics. Purchasers, either for institutions, offices, or the home, should have a basic understanding of ergonomics so that wise decisions are made when buying computer desks and chairs. Considering the amount of time that is spent in front of a monitor, by adults and children alike, this is not the place to skimp just to save a few dollars.

When designing a computer lab, the general layout needs to be determined. This can be accomplished...
