sites that show how to make doll house furniture?
Sandringham - Museum Queen's Carving School Furniture

i really need some sites. I' am making an architectural model for a school project. please give me some sites where i can get step by step instructions on making furniture as well as things such as windows and doors. by the way, the scale of my model is 1:40mm so its really tiny

You don't say what you want to make the furniture, windows and doors from. For example, do you want to use:
...paper, cardstock, or foam core board
...balsa wood
...clays of various types
...found objects

Windows and doors would just be openings in most models, I'd guess, so I'm assuming you want some kind of clear stuff for the windows or perhaps just molding around it or for the door something on a "hinge" with a knob?

If you're interested in making all kinds of miniature furniture from clays, and possibly also getting other ideas, check out these pages at my site:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/houses_str uctures_gingerbread.htm
http://glassattic.com/polymer/miniatures .htm
(my site is primarily about polymer clays, but homemade air-dry clays like bread clay or salt dough could be used, or better quality air-dry clays from the craft store like Creative Paperclay or Crayola's Air Dry Clay, could be used for many of them too).
You could of course make any of those at any scale you want.

Where would I purchase dolls house furniture??
(Untitled)

I'm doing taking a high school graphics course and I will be needing to do a model of a house I though it might look good to "furnish" it a bit for fun. Does anyone know where I would be able to purchase dolls house (the good stuff not the pink plastic stuff) ? thanks by the way I live in New Zealand so general stores or websites rather than US only chains would be great!

I don't know about New Zealand, but in Australia there is a good range of miniature furniture on ebay in the catergory of Dolls & Bears, sub category of Miniatures. You could also try places like : www.miniaturemagic.com.au, www.thedollshouse.com.au, www.aussiedollhouses.com.au, www.victoriandollhouses.com.au or just enter the following into a search engine: doll house miniatures site:.au and you should find a number of stores in Australia (site:.nz might find you some New Zealand sites too). Also, I find local bargain outlets - 2$ shops sometimes get some mini stuff that with a little paint and imagination work really well. Even childrens plastic toy furniture works if you coat it with a proper sealer that is designed to stick to plastic and then paint it to look like wood or cover with fabric. Good Luck!!

How can I provide an education for my kid without moving my furniture into the poor house?
(Untitled)

My Child turned four this past January. Of course not being five means you can't go to kindergarten. In the Klein school district in order for a child to go to pre-k, you have to be dirt poor. Even though it's a public school you still have regulations such as income which prevents you from sending your child to school. Daycare in the surrounding area cost $$$$$ big time, especially since I have two other children. My question is, does anyone know of a headstart in the Klein district or is there a way around the income guidelines? Once school starts I will have two going to school and it will help alot. Summer is here now and daycares raise tuition $20-$30! Can anyone help, cause I feel like i'm working just to pay childcare?

Maybe your child doesn't need to go to Pre-K. Check on line at some of the home schooling sites for the skills your child should have to enter kindergarten. If your child already has those skills then why send him/her to Pre-K. Headstart is usually to help those kids who have not gotten certain skills down pat.

As a former teacher I sometimes think we are trying to get the little ones into the school environment too soon. Whoops, I got in trouble for that statement before....

making doll furniture out of dough?
(Untitled)

i'm doing a project where i have to make a house and furniture miniature sized for school. i have the house done but i want to make the furniture out of dough. what is the proportion of flour to water in order for the dough to be good enough? tips on making the furniture?

Salt Dough

Ingredients
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1-1/2 cups hot water (from tap)
2 teaspoons vegetable oil (optional)

Mix the salt and flour together, then gradually add the water until the dough becomes elastic. (Some recipes call for 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil at this point.) If your mixture turns out too sticky, simply add more flour. If it turns out too crumbly, simply add more water. Knead the dough until it’s a good consistency.

If you want colored dough, mix food coloring, powdered drink mix, or paint into the water before adding it to the dry ingredients. Or you can paint your creations after baking them at 200 degrees. Baking times will vary depending on the size and thickness of the object, but make sure that all of it is hard. If the dough starts to darken before cooking is complete, cover with aluminum foil. Painted keepsakes will need to be sealed on all sides with clear varnish or polyurethane spray.

You can store your salt dough in a sealed container in the refrigerator, but usually not more than a couple of days.

Building a barbie house with an almost 4 year old? also ideas?
(Untitled)

does it sound like it would work to make a doll house with my almost 4 year old cousin. she will be spending some time over at my house while her mom is in school and i thought we could make a house/ furniture together for her barbies. Also what are some easy ideas for furniture and stuff like that?

A book shelf would be a great start! That's what we did for my doll house.
You can add curtains made out of scrape material on the walls and glue pictures of the outdoors so it looks like a real window. Or if you wanted to cut the wood to make windows you could see out of.
You could take wallpaper or paints and do each room in a different style and color. There are many things you can do. Just let your imagination run wild!!
The dollar store is a great place to look for things for the doll house. I know the ones around here have got Barbie size wooden chairs that you could use in your doll house.
If you want to make some furniture here are some ideas for you.
you could take paper towel tubes (or leftover wrapping paper tubes) and make chairs out of them by cutting away to make a seat. Then stuff the inside of the seat with batting or paper towels and glue some material over the the chair.
you can make a table out of popsicle sticks. Just glue them all together. The dollar store usually carry colored popsicle sticks if you would like those.
you can also make chairs out of popsicle sticks. Popsicle sticks are wonderful things!! ;)
If you have some old plastic cups you could turn the cups upside down and put material over them to make a table. or even a type of bar stool.
You could make a bed out of cracker box or a smaller version of a ceral box to the size of Barbie. Or even a basket might work also. If you sew you can make a matteress out of material and stuffing.
You could use a plastic bowl for a bath tub.
You can make coat hangers out of pipe cleaners.
You could make a little closet out of a small shoe box or maybe cut down a cracker box,and use a chopstick for the bar going across.

Have a fun time!! I love doing things like this and being creative!
Have a great day!!!

    School projects in the works

CARTER VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL: Moving to site of Kennedy Learning Center on North Highland Avenue. Ground broken on $6 million project in July, with a scheduled completion date of August 2010. Money for this project is coming from a 2006 school-bond referendum. After the move, students at Griffith Academy on West Clemmonsville Road and at the Millennium Academy at Kennedy will move to the old Carter building sometime during the 2010-11 school year.

GRIFFITH ACADEMY: The portion of the school built in the mid-1920s will be demolished. Access and parking improvements will be made to Deaton-Thompson Stadium, which is on West Clemmonsville Road adjacent to Griffith. This project will be included in a planned 2012 bond referendum.

CAREER CENTER: School now on Miller Street moving to site of Kennedy Learning Center on North Highland Avenue. Scheduled completion date is July 1, 2011. In addition, after the Millennium Academy and English as a Second Language programs leave the Kennedy building, the school system plans to open a new career-technical high school in the building. A new site for the ESL program has not yet been determined. The cost of these moves is $29.1 million, with money coming from the 2006 and 2008 bond referendums.

Athens MidDay: Featured Stories: Palmer Residents to put Porch ...

Although arrests were down only two from last year’s fifty-three, Mayor Paul Wiehl says Halloween was fairly calm. Students on Palmer Street cleaned up remains from the couch fire and Wiehl praises them for their actions, “Kudos to the anonymous students that cleaned up Palmer Street on Sunday. There were various city employees very impressed with the results.” Andrea and Dan both agree that the possible costs of broken furniture won't keep them from enjoying the block party, but they are worried about people coming onto their porches and stealing stuff. Still, Dan is philosophical about it, noting that if someone's going to set something on fire, he'd rather they steal the item off his porch first, "It would be a bigger problem if a fire or something happened directly in front of my house," says Dan. For now though, these students are hoping to enjoy fire-free block parties in the future.
