My daughter who turned 9 in August still loves to play with dolls and pretend play...?

she is very mature and does great in school and also loves other more "age-appropriate" things such as Hilary Duff and Hannah Montana. But she is begging for a pretend kitchen set for Christmas and my husband says she's too old. I think we should foster her imagination and let her play school, house and other related games. Am I wrong?

What a loaded question.
Mom, you are definitely right. Children should be allowed to be children for as long as they can. Children develop and change at different rates and the fact that she can still enjoy her childhood should be celebrated.
I have 2 little girls (7 & 9) and I'm not sure Hilary Duff and Hannah Montana are age appropriate. They are far too grown up for their respective ages. Why do we want children to grow up so fast?
With this information age, they have lost a lot of their innocence already. Todays demands on our children far exceeds the demands placed on us 25 years ago. If she is able to escape the stress by playing pretend than that shows some maturity. Most adults do not know how to deal with today's pressures and resort to numbing themselves with alcohol.
Your child's brain is developing in the most amazing ways so why would you limit her or make her ashamed of something that is completely natural. Our first priority is to respect our children as separate human beings who are intellegent and have a sense of their own direction. If playing pretend is neither offensive to others or harmful than why all the fuss?

Need creative help w/ a school "pretend" invention project?

Hi All! My 9 yr old son has an invention project for school. He wants to make a "machine" that will do your homework for you, do your chores (feed the dog, set the table, etc.), and he wants to be able to play his PSP (Playstation Portable) on it.

Some ideas he has come up with so far include: a box, some silver spray paint, some knobs, and his extra PSP cover attached somehow.

Can anyone think of any other ideas on how to make this? He's not real happy with what he has so far, but neither him nor I possess any creativity whatsoever. Any ideas/help/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

perhaps the box could have an opening on either end. One end to insert the homework, the other end where the completed homework comes out.

You could do a bulleted list on the computer of all the chores it would do (I would probably limit it to less than 10 for space reasons) Attach this to the face of the box and press Red bulletin board tacks (the ones with the high heads) into the cardboard where the bullets on the list are. This way your son could just push a thumb tack button to indicate what chore the machine should do.

OR: It could have the same list idea with a time indicated as to when the chore should be done. You could get a small, flat, cheap digital clock from the automotive department at Walmart so that the machine knows when the clock says 6:00 then it should set the table, or 7:30am for feeding the dog, etc.

Just an idea! Good luck! I hope he makes an A no matter what he does. :)

Try adding a doll. Insert it waist up coming out of the top of the box. The doll's arms would be what does all the work, while your son plugs in his directions to the box using his dials, etc. You could even add some extra arms, so it can do more than one project at a time. He can add things in each hand to represent what the "invention" does. You could place the box on a roller skate or some other sort of wheels. After all, it has to be able to get around (Smile) to do it's work. Spray paint the doll the same color as the box.

Have fun!

You can put the robot on an RC car so it can move around...if it is not too big.

Try putting a 9 volt battery in it and put some lights on the outside...

Put two slinkies as arms. Put work gloves on the ends of the slinkies

Try multiple boxes....a large one for the body, small one for the head.

get creative with paint. For example, the box can be solid silver...but put a yellow lightning bolt on the chest (or something similar)

Lets pretend play Judge. If you were the Judge over this case how would you sentence these people?

NOTE: I would never do anything like this, nor am I or anyone I know in a situation like this. I am just very curious.

Ok. Say there is a Young Teen who's family beats them and other things on a weekly basis. The 'mother' and 'siblings' (2 brothers, 1 sister) doing the actions, with 1 of the brothers playing 80% or so of the sibling involvement (this one is 16-17), and goes out to the holding place nightly to punch and berate YT. 2 other siblings are involved in ways such as hitting YT when told to by the 'mother', and bringing YT back out to their holding place. It has been going on for a year or so because the YT doesn't think anyone will believe them if they were to tell and is never hit on the face so marks can be covered up.

The father is aware of what goes on, but doesn't try to stop it / leaves the room when it's happening, but on the other hand will sometimes bring medical supplies out to YT to clean out a wound.

Some 'other things' are:
Keeps them chained up out of the house for most of the year (inside in the unheated basement during coldest months)
Doesn't feed them properly.. food brought out has been tampered with / is urinated or something else done it in front of YT.
Not allowed to bathe / be loose from the chain hardly ever.
Tools used to beat/cut/burn/injure YT are fists / feet/ bats/ knives / cigarettes / razors/ belts / anything available really.
Breaking YT's limbs and not bring them in for medical attention.
Not buy them new clothes

YT is still allowed to go to school, though and the school tries to get involved but YT won't tell them anything. They make a call home about what they think is going on. YT knows what's going to happen is going to be bad, so YT leaves a note in a teachers mail box.

When YT gets home they are beaten severely and one thing leads to another until the 'mother' and the most involved 'brother' decided to burn the 'worthless sack of crap' so the brother goes to get the gas can while the mother goes to get some matches. The YT is too badly beaten to get up and run away, so is still there AND ALIVE when the 'mother' and 'sibling' come back out and douse them in gasoline and set them on fire.

The 2 other siblings are nearby and don't try to stop them. The father is inside watching TV.

During this time the teacher checks his mailbox and finds the note and being as he was the one to go to the higher up school officials he calls 911 and tells them to go over there. The police roll up as YT is being lit on fire and are able to put out YT so they are still alive. The police see the 'brother' pouring the gas and the 'mother' lighting the match and dropping it onto YT.

YT lives and in the hospital for a long, long time obviously. Would the police take a statement from YT or would YT have go to court?

So basically this is what each person does:
Father: ignores what is happening, but sometimes brings would cleaners / maybe food scraps out to YT
Older Teen Brother: Does whatver 'mother' says and more beyond what she instructs on his own.
Mother: Is orcistator and abuser
Younger Older Teen Brother: Beats YT when instructed by 'mother'. If hesitant is threatened to get the same treatment as YT.
Younger Sister: Same as Younger Older Brother, but seems to take some pleasure out of beating YT.

What would the sentencing for each person be?

The one to get the most time would be mother, as she is the basic instigator of the whole thing and has general control of her other children. The YTs siblings can basically say at some point that mom 'made' them do it, as a defense. In order to get mother to do more time, officials may even give siblings immunity in order for them to testify against mother. Charges of neglect may also be filed against dad but he too can simply claim he was abused and brainwashed by controling mother.
To get down to exactly how much time anyone would do is nearly impossible since each one would bring up their own excuses for defense (even mother). None of it matters though, as YT is to suffer with all they have gone through for the rest of his/her life.

  • Exclusive Interview with Doug Davidson: Veteran soap actor discusses daytime ...

For 31 years. How did you get the job?

Doug Davidson : It was a convergence of a lot of events in my life. It created an opportunity that, in retrospect, I think is all in how you set yourself up and believe in who you are and what you do.

I was in a karate class that two other guys were involved in … I was driving a taxicab at the time and was studying acting in Hollywood. The taxicab job was from five in the evening until five in the morning. I was thinking if I worked nights I could be free for interviews during the day. But, the fact that it was a twelve-hour job didn’t leave much time … by the time I slept and woke up again it was noon, then I got something to eat and it was time to drive back into Hollywood and get back into my cab.

In my karate class there was a restaurant manager and the husband of a soap opera star and I got a job in the restaurant and became friends with the guy who had the spouse on the soap opera. As a favor one day we drove down because they were having car trouble and picked his wife up at the studio and I met the Executive Producer. He called two weeks later to have me read for a role. I read for it and got the part.

She is "teacher" to her 4 & 6 year brothers (and sometimes their friends). She loves the pointer and the different pads of paper for report cards, grades, hall passes, etc. There is a large pouch to put excess paper in so there's no frustration in trying to fit everything back into it's original spot. Everything is self contained and it folds up to a manageable size. The toy manufacturer states...
