I'm a homeschooling mom of 7. Our budget is very tight and with the recent gas prices driving up the cost of living, we're really struggling. I'd like to get training as a medical transcriptionist so that I can work from home, around my schedule. I do have a job lined up after I get training.
In order to pay for school, we'd have to cash in my husband's retirement plan from an old job. There's not a lot in it, but just enough to pay for the school and buy me a new computer and desk to set up a home office away from the kids. Do you think this is a good decision? We really don't have the money for a loan.
We usually get a ton of money back from the IRS since we have so many kids, so I'm not worried about oweing in April.
Tapping into retirement savings should almost always be a last resort.
If the retirement plan is a 401(k), see what kind of loan provisions there are with the plan. If that doesn't work, or the retirement account is a traditional IRA, you will be looking at paying tax on the w/d and possibly a 10% penalty as well.
I would suggest you speak with a CPA regarding the tax consequences, and explore all other options before tapping into retirement savings.

we have a broadcast set in our video production class, which shows the news to the whole school oncfe a week. for our senior project, me and a group of 4 plan to rebuild it and we want to do as much as possible to make it look professional. right now we are on figuring out how to present our plans for our senior project to the whole class, so we havent started anything yet. id like some ideas on what we can or what we shouldnt do. also, the desk really sucks, and my group members want to get wood and build a new one. but wouldnt it be easier to just buy a desk than to get the wood?
anything helps. thank you!
That all depends on how much you have to spend.? There are five of you so I think you should vote on whether or not to buy a desk or build a new one . That is how I would do it You tell them to write down on a piece of paper what the want to do buy one or make one the one who gets the most votes wins.
So in your case that would be 3 out of 5 to win the vote for or against.

I'm writing a story and my boys are getting ready to go back to school for the fall session. They are wealthy enough to be taking Latin and the other higher subjects, so what school supplies would they need? Also, how would the school classrooms be set up? Would they be like a lecture hall or more like modern classrooms with older desks?
lot of supplies a and a lecture hall
This is the 3rd day of school and I got a call from the school wanting to set up an appointment to discuss sending my daughter back to kindergarten. Can they do this? They graduated her last year so they are the one that passed her saying she was ready for 1rst. She doesnt finish her work in the time allowed but gets it with extra time. She does need a little more one on one than some students but not enough to disrupt the rest of the class. She moved to this school mid year last year and before moving had no problems but the teacher did pay a lot of attention not just give work and sit at desk rather than helping if she needed it. This new school last year had her coming home saying she was too stupid to do the work but when she came home and I explained the directions she got the all right. I had a talk with that teacher and after that she did well enough that they passed her. I am worried that if they move her back it will make even more of an impact on her self esteem
Also she has ADHD and on meds for that. SHe also has a lot of health issues from being born at 32 weeks(8 weeks early and weighed 3lbs) and only weighs 35 lbs now so they cant up her meds. And she was diagonosed by a psyhcologist not just a doctor. And the other reason I have a worry about the emotional issues is she is in counseling now due to she and her sister had been sexually abused dec 06 and after that is when she started having more problems in school.
As a parent and kindergarten teacher, I would say that YOU have the ultimate say as to where your daughter should be placed. You didn't mention what state your in but before I pass my students on, I like for them to be successfully in 80% of the report card areas to help them feel successful and secure. I've always felt that of all grade levels, kindergarten should be the one that isn't hard. If your child felt that it was too hard or that they were frustrasted because of the expectations, it won't hurt to allow an extra year of growth and maturity.
My youngest attended an early fives program before Kindergarten even though she was "old" enough. Now at 5'th grade I can see that she has self confidence in herself and her skills that the extra year allowed her. I think keeping her back really helped her mature and grow as a student. We often have discussed the fact that she just wasn't "ready" for kindergarten at that time and she seems happy where she is.
Hope this helps you make a decision....Hope this helps

Librarianship at The Center for Cartoon Studies' Schulz Library
Oh, hello again. This weeks installment of Comic Book and Zine Librarianship by Caitlin McGurk will be all about working for The Center for Cartoon Studies , where I am the first degreed librarian in command. As I explained in my previous post, CCS is a small graduate art school in White River Junction Vermont, for the study of Sequential Art. They grant both certificates as well as masters degrees in cartooning, and are currently in their 5th year of existence. When I first came to the school to in the summer of 2009 as an intern, the library was being run by the teacher and zine-genius Robyn Chapman, as well as Jen Vaughn and a few other student workers. Just over a year later in 2010, they hired me as their first MLIS-holding librarian.
The main project I was brought aboard for was to overhaul the library’s cataloging system. Up until now, they had been using LibraryThing as their online catalog, and added tags to each item to indicate whether an item was checked out or not. While LibraryThing is an excellent tool, as far as professionality, flexibility, and efficiency goes- it’s not the greatest choice for an ever-growing academic library. If you’d like to check out the old library catalog and see some of our holdings, you can find it here .
