On the Wright Stuff this morning the question arose about children and school uniforms in the UK. Someone said that children in Europe do not wear school uniform - but I seem to remember in Spain and Cyprus seeing children in uniforms. What say you?
Thank you for all who answered - my apologies for excluding England from Europe I really should have phrased my question more clearly.
They do in Ireland and some schools (Private) Have a school uniform policy in France.
I think school uniform is a great way to ensure that all children do not get so easily bullied at school simply because mums and dad can't afford the new pair of 'Must have' Trainers or whatever else.

This school insists that strict adherence to the dress code improves academic results.
Is school uniform necessary?
More so in secondary school I think. It is a form of discipline and also can prevent a certain type of bullying.
Teenagers tend to single out their peers who do not have name brands or even rob those that do.
In terms of studying I don't think I would have learned any differently whether i wore the uniform or not, but that's me.

I asked a simple question about opting out of my daughter's school uniform policy, and I was attacked and received many unsolicited arguments and comments as to how great uniforms are, and how I'm stupid to oppose them, and only two actual answers to my question. Why do people get so upset at this issue? They acted like I said I was going to take thier children's uniforms away or something. What ever happened do having the decency to not answer a question if you don't know the answer? This is a QUESTIONS and ANSWERS forum, not a method whereby you can attack and harrass people who don't share your beliefs.

What kind of shirt, pants, shorts, dress, shoes and socks are required?
My boys wear white shirts (dress shirts in the winter and polo shirts with the school's name in the spring and fall), navy blue pants, navy blue tie, navy blue cardigans or sweater vests with the school's name on it and black oxford shoes or penny loafers. The girls at their school wear the same thing except they wear peter-pan collar shirts, plaid jumpers, ties, and hair bows. They have navy and white saddle shoes or black penny loafers.
My school has a uniform and we get Fridays to wear whatever we want. I find uniforms much easier than figuring out what to wear everyday.

Dear Reader,
In the midst of the proliferation of BlackBerry phones, SUVs and multi-million dollar contracts and consultancies, the suffering of Jamaica's children continues to worsen.
With or without the "empirical" data, it is clear to the naked eye that child poverty is growing. If the subscription to the government's PATH programme (a limited welfare support system for poor children) is any indication of what is happening to the youngest and weakest amongst us, then the evidence is clear - more and more children are joining the population of the poorest Jamaicans.
The stark reality is that children have become an endangered species in Jamaica. In other civilised societies where children are afforded the highest priority, the picture is very different. In those countries children are provided with parks and playgrounds, free books and libraries everywhere, child-care facilities and after-school programmes, with "slow" school zones for traffic, brightly coloured pedestrian crossings, and stiff laws and penalties for child abusers.

A new report says that the mental health and educational difficulties suffered by the children of personnel serving in the armed forces are often unnoticed and should be treated through dedicated Government spending.
Research carried out by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund found that, though only 16% of 1,302 people surveyed thought that children with parents erving in the armed forces are “significantly affected by their parent being deployed to a warzone”, the problems suffered by these children are much more serious than most people think.
The report, entitled “The Overlooked Casualties of Conflict”, said that amongst the challenges faced by services children were: worrying when a parent is away in a war zone; readjusting to their return; regularly moving school; and dealing with a parent’s death.
The report added that worries about a parent being away in a war zone could show itself in changes in the child’s behaviour, such as being more emotional, having sleeping problems, having tantrums or being more argumentative.
