Uniform in question now has a large triangular shaped hole in it right in the middle of the shoulder area. There is no way that it can be easily repaired. Would you want it replaced at the school's expense? At the child's parents' expense? Would you not say anything and just replace it yourself? Or some other course of action?
I would go into the school and complain...not necessarilly about the fact that the uniform is damaged but about the fact you have not been informed about this. The school should've noticed or dealt with the issue and come to you or contacted you to explain about it and about what they are going to do.
Once you have been into the school I would put it to them that your child cannot wear it anymore and pose the question of who is going to foot the bill. I imagine the school will and then contact the parent or guardian of the child who has done it and claim the money back from them.
You need to say something otherwise the issue may arrise again.

Is school uniform necessary?
More so in secondary school I think. It is a form of discipline and also can prevent a certain type of bullying.
Teenagers tend to single out their peers who do not have name brands or even rob those that do.
In terms of studying I don't think I would have learned any differently whether i wore the uniform or not, but that's me.

Well see what he/she thinks if they are strongly against it don't because it will just make their school life miserable, and if they dont have two ways about it, sure why not? It should depend on the child not you, it is his/her school year, and wearing clothes that make him/her uncomfortable will not make school as enjoyable.

On the Wright Stuff this morning the question arose about children and school uniforms in the UK. Someone said that children in Europe do not wear school uniform - but I seem to remember in Spain and Cyprus seeing children in uniforms. What say you?

They do in Ireland and some schools (Private) Have a school uniform policy in France.
I think school uniform is a great way to ensure that all children do not get so easily bullied at school simply because mums and dad can't afford the new pair of 'Must have' Trainers or whatever else.
What kind of shirt, pants, shorts, dress, shoes and socks are required?
My boys wear white shirts (dress shirts in the winter and polo shirts with the school's name in the spring and fall), navy blue pants, navy blue tie, navy blue cardigans or sweater vests with the school's name on it and black oxford shoes or penny loafers. The girls at their school wear the same thing except they wear peter-pan collar shirts, plaid jumpers, ties, and hair bows. They have navy and white saddle shoes or black penny loafers.
