Do school uniforms reduce violence?

Some say, "It reduces violence because if someone wears an expensive name-brand t-shirt, others get jealous and pick on them" or something like that.

I find that hard to believe......

Look............When I was in high school, sure there were occasional fights from time to time.........
but NONE over what somebody was wearing!

everyone pretty much dressed casually and no none gave a crap about what the other was wearing.

but studies show that uniforms DO reduce school violence.
http://www.crf-usa.org/school-violence/c hallenge-of-school-violence.html
Long Beach school officials found that overall school crime decreased 36 percent. Fights decreased 51 percent, sex offenses decreased 74 percent, weapons offenses decreased 50 percent, assault and battery offenses decreased 34 percent, and vandalism decreased 18 percent. Less than 1 percent of the students chose not to wear uniforms.

I find this hard to believe.
Your thoughts?

In my experience, uniforms can help create a more serious tone in a school. Otherwise I am not sure why this might be true. When I was in school, I wore uniforms and while i wasn't a big fan, it did make clothes less of a distraction. As a teacher, I did notice that some schools with uniforms had a more serious academic tone, but I have seen this done in non-uniform schools with a strict dress code. The other upside is that it can be much cheaper to buy uniforms especially if the school sets up exchanges for buying old uniforms that have been outgrown.

I just have to respond to those who say uniforms take away creativity- BS. I wore a uniform for twelve years- didn't like it much but it did not take away my creativity/individuality one bit. There are so many other ways to express yourself beyond clothes. Besides, most kids all try to dress alike anyway, at least like the group they hang with.

What would be some supporting points to school uniforms reducing gang violence?

I am creating my thesis for an argumentative essay. Any help would be highly appreciated.

School uniforms create a sense of solidarity with the entire student body. It helps ease somewhat, the psychological impression that each young and immature person in school is his or her own universe, needing a port of call called the "peer group" of like minded and like dressed individuals.

This will not solve the socio-economic reasons for gang war. Nor will it improve the school's discipline, police, or teacher resources. If you are living in a Democrat fiefdom, like Detroit, Chicago, or New Orleans, there is not much school uniforms can do given the preponderance of support given to crime and criminals.

How Do You Stop School Violence?

How Do You Stop School Violence? Besides uniforms and metal detectors.

There are a number of things that can be done. It's pretty intensive though and probably most schools won't do it. To many parents wouldn't go along, and it would be expensive.

Schooling the kids in a heavily disciplined military style environment, where messing with other kids was not accepted.

Do school uniforms minimize violence?

Will gangs no longer be able to represent their colors if school uniforms are implemented? Will children not get killed over a jacket or some high priced material clothing?

This site is really technical and takes a while to slog through the academic language, but it does eventually come to a conclusion which is that uniforms don't really do much at all. The difference in the behaviors compared between uniformed and non-uniformed students is negligible. http://www.members.tripod.com/rockqu/uni form.htm

This site is also very wordy, but the problem is that the statistics cited here are exactly opposite from the previous site.

So, the answer is ?????? It depends on which "expert" you agree with.

  • UNHCR - UNHCR concerned at planned forced return from Sweden to Iraq

UNHCR is very concerned by reports that Sweden plans to send around 25 Iraqis back to Baghdad tomorrow, Wednesday 19th January. We understand that a number of those scheduled for return belong to religious and ethnic groups targeted by violence in Iraq. They, and others slated for return, appear to have profiles that would warrant protection under the 1951 Refugee Convention or the European Union's Qualification Directive.

We are troubled that our advice, including on the situation of minorities in Iraq, is not sufficiently taken into account by Sweden when reviewing negative decisions that were made in 2008 and 2009. We believe that the recent deterioration in the situation of minorities in Iraq has not been adequately taken into account.

UNHCR has frequently appealed to states to ensure that asylum applicants originating from Iraq's central governorates of Baghdad, Diyala, Ninewa and Salah-al-Din, as well as from Kirkuk province, benefit from international protection in the form of refugee status under the 1951 Convention or another form of protection depending on the circumstances of the case. We understand that many of those being returned on Wednesday come from these areas.
