I know that they are suppose to be self paced but do you take just as many pop quizzes and have just as many homework assignments as a traditional class. Are you required to do projects? Are the rules for behavior just as strict as a traditional high school? Could a student go to an alternative school because he likes the flexible schedule or is it ONLY for kids who have gotten themselves in trouble?
I went to an alternative school cause i needed to get done faster and The work was just packets. We could only take them home after a certain amount of days without absences and had to bring them back. We had to do test separate from our packets to turn in. There aren't any pop quizzes cause u do everything on Ur own. As far and rules well it all depends on what school. The one i went to was a Lil more flex able but i wasn't a real trouble maker. I finished 8 classes in 3 months and still got to walk with the main school.
Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center (www.eaglerockschool.org) is a national, tuition-free, residential, alternative high school ...
because i could not keep up with the work at my regular high school, my dad transferred me to timber ridge high school. it is an alternative school that a lot o kids go to because of their behavior in their other schools. since i got transferred, my parents gave up on me and a lot of my friends wont talk to me. i am actually keeping my grades up and i believe there is hope for me to graduate now.
Well some of your "friends" and family may have given up on you because they may think that you had given up on you by not graduating from the same high school they will. MAYBE they thought you should have tried a little harder, I don't know the circumstances so that's really a shot in the dark. Make the most of this opportunity to get things done & get your diploma, though. Keep your head up.
I have around 18 credits. If I go to an alternative high school, how long will it take to graduate?
How many credits do you need?
So If I try and go fast, can I get it all in a year?
I'm suppose to be in 12th grade this year, just 10th grade credits.
whenever your in those kinds of schools you always can get then faster than a normal school.. the faster you work the faster you pass the class

I was thinking that I wanted to be MYSELF. I am creative and bright (literally, haha).
So I was thinking of wearing this:
-A hot pink sweatshirt that I made. It has the neck cut off so it kind of shows off my shoulders (TASTEFULLY). It has a camera painted on it, and it has "Sharpshooter's Photography" from some baseball shirt on it.
-A plain black tank top underneath the pink sweatshirt.
-Dark indigo skinny jeans.
-A metal studded belt with a tape recorder for a belt buckle.
-Pink flats.
-Black and white checkered socks.
(Mind you, my hair is also partially pink, so I will match.)
I really want to show off my individuality and creativity.
Is this a good idea, or should I dress conservatively to "make a good impression"?
Also, I'd like to say that this is an artsy ALTERNATIVE high school. And my grades suck and stuff, so I don't really have much to offer besides a cool personality.
YOURE PREGNANT!!!?!?!?!?!
In the 1980's, Los Angeles Unified School District had three openly gay school board members: Jeff Horton, Jackie Goldberg, and Mark Slavkin. They gave the green light for Dr. Maria Uribe to begin Project Ten, an alternative high school. This school was for Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered, and Questioning Students.
The project has gone for almost thirty years. Do you think the Christian Fundamentalism of the Deep South will ever permit this to occur in that region?
Several respondents have expressed views concerning the real need, or the appropriateness of such schools.
For example one person wrote: "I don't see the point for separate schools for gay and straight kids any more than segregated ones for people of different races."
But it is because of all the religious based bigotry and severe condemnatory attitudes against gays which allow the atmosphere exist where many of our present day schools do not do enough to stop all the ridicule, harm, and even physical violence done to these students.
It is a true shame that there IS all too frequently a need for schools for gays, and other "at risk students." Perhaps if we lived in a world where Christ's message of love is TRULY practiced we would not need such schools.
Fortunately there are schools like this now in existence across our country -- but I doubt there will be any in the Fundamentalists south -- a bastion of prejudice, exclusionism, and religious based bigotry. What I find most cruel, bigotry against gays is even worse among blacks than caucasians. I find it ironic that a group of people who should most understand the harm done the evils of bigotry and prejudice should victimize other minorities themselves. If they want to quote Bible passages against homosexual acts, then perhaps we should quote those passages sanctioning slavery.

Someone mentioned
Salt Lake City.
Unknown to many people, this city is NOT a typical bastion of Mormonism. In fact less than 50% Mormon. Furthermore, its politics is quite liberal. In fact, the city has two elected openly gay women and an openly gay man, representing the city in the State House and Senate, respectively.
And just recently Salt Lake City has adopted pro-gay statutes -- with LDS Church support!
Hours after the LDS Church announced its support (Dec 11, 2009) of proposed Salt Lake City ordinances aimed at protecting gay and transgender residents from discrimination in housing and employment, the City Council unanimously approved the measures.
"The church supports these ordinances," spokesman Michael Otterson told the council, "because they are fair and reasonable and do not do violence to the institution of marriage."
They also are consistent with Mormon teachings, he said. "I believe in a church that believes in human dignity, in treating people with respect even when we disagree -- in fact, especially when we disagree."
"The LDS Church's endorsement was hailed by leaders of Utah's gay community -- some of them stunned -- who called it a historic night they hope will set the stage for statewide legislation.
My only regret is that they di not understand that their stand against gay marriage ALSO marginalizes all gay people, and definitely does NOT "respect the dignity" of gay people.

YORK | York schools to begin offering an alternative energy course ...
YORK --
About 16 students at the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center in York will enjoy a "glimpse into the future" this semester in a new course that will teach them about wind energy, solar power and fuel cells.
The course - part of the Marcraft GreenSTEM alternative energy program - is being offered with a $40,000 grant received by the York school district, one of four offered this year through the state Department of Education.
"This field is just exploding," said Ron Roveri, director of the technology center adjacent to York Comprehensive High School.
"You hear about it any time you turn on the news."
The class, to begin when the high school's second semester begins Tuesday, will teach students about alternative energy sources and include hands-on experimentation. It is designed to teach students not only how to generate electricity from different sources, but also how it can be used.
Former state education superintendent Jim Rex called the program a "glimpse into the future" during a visit to a Spartanburg high school that offered the course through a 2009 pilot program.
