Chinese language school for a 12-year-old in Taiwan?

We will be in Taiwan this June. We are looking for a good summer camp for American kids to pick up Chinese. We would prefer Kaohsiung. However, if we have to, we can be in Taipei as well. Does anyone know any good places to look into? Thanks.

Hmm. thats a tough one, to get a school that will be able to integrate a 12 year old without any Chinese speaking or writing skill is hard. There are semi-affordable bilingual schools (I work at one in Taichung) but it isnt very well set up to start beginners, really. The Bible-Thumpin Compound hugging American schools that you can find in the major cities have all english curriculae and are geared towards super-rich expat engineers and biz-ops with deep pockets (generally multinats pay for it to attract so called 'top minds' which in most cases is faulty thinking evidenced by the downturn at work- thats another story...)

I can see other parents who are at bilingual schools who DON'T have a partner who can speak chinese or read chinese and their kids fall behind in the chinese curriculae. You really need to have a parent who can speak Chinese, who can help with the HUGE amount of homework to be integrated well and to keep up.

The kids can still make friends and be happy at the bilingual school, and will still get a basic crash course in survival level Chinese, and probably will do OK, I cannot say how well they would do on English government standard testing back in your home country afterwards...

Your best bet is to take lessons at a TLI bushiban in a beginner class. If you are concerned about exposing a 12 year old to some of the weirder 1st year members of the teaching community who may mentally operate at a 12 year old level, (...well I am much more mature mentally now!- I act at least 15 maybe!) you can arrange for very reasonably priced private tutor to even come to your house if you are in one of the cities that TLI has operations in.

Many states and provinces in Canada have excellent home schooling programs to keep your kid at standard with the other kids. As long as you have the internet and some people willing to supervise the standardized government tests besides yourself, you should be ok.

For Alberta, Canada: (it wins awards in Canada, anyways and will keep you at a good/better than average educational standard) (in my opinion) *bias alert: I am from Alberta.

I am not sure about what qualifications you need to get on with the home schooling program re: citizenship/ residency nonsense. But I would say if you have cash they probably will take you with some caveats... contact them to find out.

EDIT: sorry, misread a bit: a SUMMER program- anyways the info above is still good, my mental exercise for today. OOps. Overkill.

Should I take Spanish or Chinese for high school language?

I have been taking Spanish from 1st to 8th grade. I have the option to either go into honors Spanish or start Mandarin Chinese from the beginning. I also hear that Chinese is not that hard in my high school and both languages are taught for all four years. Which would colleges like more and which would help me later when I get a job after college?

Spanish...it's more useful in America than is Chinese. You would also have a better chance of speaking it more fluently than you would Chinese because you have taken more of it.

  • Interested in Learning Chinese? There Is No Better Place Than ...

There is no question that China has been the global success story of the past ten years: from the success of the Beijing Olympics to its apparently continuous economic progress, China continues to creating headlines for several factors, and since fascination for China itself has grown, so has the passion to become skilled at Chinese as a foreign language. Actually, it is currently believed that over 1 million people around the globe are learning Mandarin Chinese.

But it is also not a secret that as far as learning languages is concerned, Chinese is not an easy option: the challenging blend of sinographic writing system, the infamously tricky sounds and a wide array of local tongues is usually more than enough to convince many a student that the Chinese language is such a great puzzle that is so hard to figure out inside the classroom.

Despite the fact that learning the Chinese language can be a tricky idea – well, what language is not? – there is one particular way to break the many Mandarin myths that are present – which is to study and master the Chinese language in China.
