Cyber School?

I am planning to cyber school my son. I am trying to decide between PA Cyber and Agora. Any thoughts?

Any school that uses the K12 curriculuim is going to be as good as the other. K12.com has invested more than $100 million into creating a great curriculuim. We have been using it for awhile now and I won't use anything else. K12 doesn't shut down every day at a certain time, although once a month they will shut down the website at 5pm to do maintainance on the site. They usually do it on a Friday so it is nonintrusive. From a parent standpoint I love it....and my daughter is getting a great education.

cyber school?

I am looking for opinions on cyber school. I would really like to hear from parents who have experience with cyber school.

My kids cyber school in PA also... As a mom that homeschooled the older kids, I certainly enjoy cyber schooling! The lesson plans and record keeping are taken care of. My kids are involved in many "outside" activities that keep them in contact with lots of other kids.. It definately works for us.

Cyber school?

Has anyone used Agora cyberschool or anyother cyber/home school? Any thoughts, pros/cons? Thanks.

Unlike the old days, when everyone was forced to fit into the same schooling mold, it is now possible to mold the school to fit you! And that is a good thing.
Cyberschooling may work for you if you have dedicated access to high speed internet (ie: no need to constantly "borrow" a parent's computer). A good cyberstudent must be highly motivated. You are correct to ask about a specific online school, because the quality of the cyberschools does differ. Ask if you can take a virtual tour or take a sample offering over the summer to see if a cyberschool suits your needs, before you commit to a high fee or a full year of study. My son is taking two online classes, and this is working out well for him. Look for a class that has an active online message board where classmates really enjoy interacting and share their IM information. You do not need to take an entire curriculum online. For example, we are just doing math and AP history online. Other courses are designed just as we like and need.
The other option is traditional home school, where "mom" teaches classes at home. This is more labor intensive for the mom. But mom might be particularly good in one or two areas, and want cyber teachers for some other classes (for example, math) and that works well for a lot of people too. The pro of this type of schooling is that it is extremely flexible and there are often many co-ops you can get involved in as parents share expertise. The con is that it is extra work for mom.
Check online by googling homeschool resources and your location. You should be able to find some emails of local people who will help you, as well as local support groups and resources.

Cyber-school?

I was seriously looking into getting cyber-schooled.
I wanted to know the pros & cons of it.

pleasee tell meee. thanks (:<3

I go to Florida Virtual school and I love it. I am in the tenth grade and just started it this school year. You have a teacher for each class and all you have to do is call them every month to check in. You can do the assignments anytime you want as long as you finish the ones assigned for the week by the end of the week. Each class has usually 3-5 assignments for the week. It is not hard at all. You just have to be determined to actually do the work and not get behind pace. You have a grade book where you can see the grade you got on any assignment. You can also email a teacher or call them whenever you want if you need help with something. The only downside is that you don't get a diploma from it and have to get one another way.

Would one receive a regular high school diploma from a cyber school?

If one were to graduate from a cyber high school, would one receive a regular high school diploma or just an equivalent? (Similar to a GED.)

I want to switch to cyber school & this is the only detail my parents are concerned about. What are some other resources I could show them to prove the validity/legitimacy of a cyber high school education?

It depends if and through whom the school is accredited.
If it is accredited by WASC for example in California, then it would most likely be a true diploma.

  • School cyber bullying called all too common - Times Union

COHOES -- A cyber bullying expert had some eye-opening news for school district parents Thursday a day after two Facebook pages were found that evaluated the sexual prowess of female Cohoes High School students.

''It happens out there more than you know but the media can focus attention on one school and make it feel like you have a unique problem,'' said Kelly Schermerhorn to a crowd of about 100 people in the high school library. ''You are not alone.''

The pages, which have been removed from the social networking website, were called "Cohoes Flame" and "Cohoes Tramp." The creator, or creators, of the pages have not been identified yet, but will likely be revealed within the next month as Facebook responds to a Cohoes police request, Mayor John McDonald said Wednesday. He said the culprit is likely a student, or recent graduate, of the high school.

Schermerhorn said social networking sites, e-mail, texting and sexting have made such problems more prevalent, and the electronic media revolution has produced a generation who sometimes use the Internet without thinking of the consequences.
