I am a 15 year old freshman currently attending a public high school in GA, and recently I have been researching homeschooling and virtual schools. I was previously in private school through the 8th grade, and after two weeks in public school I am thinking that maybe I should look into my other options. I would appreciate any helpful information or resources about homeschooling or online school. I would also particularly like to know more about Georgia Virtual School and any other online schools that a student in Georgia could use.
Georgia Virtual School is a k12 virtual academy. They have become very popular due to the fact that they have a great curriculum. You don't have to pay anything to enroll due to the fact that it is a public charter school. Don't let anyone tell you that it isn't a "real" school or that you won't get a good education. As long as you're willing to do the work, the potential to receive an excellent education is there. Best of luck!
Beginning with all new instructional development starting in July, the Georgia Virtual School, a program of the Georgia Department of Education ...
I need to take a health course over the summer and I am going on vacation during my school's summer school, anyway I was wondering do these courses take a long time to do (like hour wise) can I take them when ever in the simmer or do they have set dates, I would like to take it during the middle of July through the beginning of August. Also are these classes hard to do?
Georgia Virtual courses for summer begin in June and last either 5 or 6 weeks depending on the schedule one selects. Classes are regular high school courses, not credit recovery ones, so do require about 4 hours per day of work for a 1/2 unit summer school class. All summer courses end in July.
The advantage of Georgia Virtual School summer session over your regular high school's summer school is you can work any time of the day from any place with Internet access.
I am a student in Georgia Virtual High School. It seems Internet Explorer has a problem with me logging in. I try to log in with my correct user and password and the page just refreshes. I e-mailed the help desk and they told me to keep pop-up blocker unchecked and install all updates for IE 7.0 or download Firefox. I downloaded Firefox temporarily to do my classwork, but I really dislike Firefox, it is too big a filesize for my small amount of memory that does the same thing as IE. Now that you've read all of this.....
The Site:

What can I do to prevent further log-in problems with IE at this site? What are links to updates that I need to fix the problem? Do I need to have anything else special checked? Or should I just rollback and reinstall?
Thanks!
Looking at the link you've provided, Georgia Virtual High uses Desire2Learn as their web-based application. Desire2Learn has known issues with IE7 and IE6 or Firefox should be used instead.
or at all?
I've sent them an email but they never responded.
Try Connections Academy. It's a free online Virtual School.
Florida has a really good one, you can always move south or pay for the courses.
i want this to be a top post no extra comments please, just answer.! thanks
Thank bob, this was what kind of answer i needed, because i started homeschooling last year it was very hard getting started. but I needed that first year to adapt from public to private. I talk with enrollment counselor at gva last year but was skepticile becuase it was my first year. And i didn't want to make any wrong moves. Local school hear in my area are about to lose it's accrediations so I pull my child out. I wish with your answer bob I did this last year, Becuase like me I would love for her to take algebra I in the 7th grade. but she is approaching 8th grade next year. and will probably be just get started with algebra because math is her hardest subject. thanks you have convience me to join!
We used it since October 2007 for 5th grade course work. My son does take 7th grade Algebra.
I find it to be very good for it's purpose. It allows the student to be at home taking classes with a "learning coach" (Mom or Dad) assisting as needed. At this grade, my son is self sufficient and logs on every day and does his work. Mostly I assist with algebra with some assistance in history, and literature.
If sending your son/daughter to a public school is troubling as far as the peer pressure, bad influences, etc.. this is definitely the way to go. We could no longer afford private tuition and we tried public school for third grade. Third grade was rotten as the culture clash from private to public was great.
The courses are all online. All the books, workbooks, teacher answer books are sent "FREE" and brand new. they even send rocks, sand and beakers for science classes including large world maps for history.
The lessons are all computer based. Think Powerpoint presentations with audio. It's material presented in a bright clear format.
A teacher at the beginning of the year is assigned to every student in the teacher's local area. The teacher may have as many as 60 students local. Our teacher has a Masters degree in education. The drawback I've seen is there is little interaction between the teacher and my son. There may be a net meeting session about every 6 weeks, but it's not mandatory. I've never spoke to the teacher on the phone but have traded emails.
Honestly I haven't needed her for teaching but sometimes I have questions about a process.
The student must attend a minimum of 5 hours per day in Georgia. About 100% of the time all work can be completed within about 2 hours! We completed a years material of Science by Christmas. Algebra is challenging as it's two grade levels higher but it takes about an hour per day.
The class work is not easy but it's not very difficult either. I think the amount of material covered per day could easily be increased without harming the student's learning.
The staff at K12 is very professional, more so than our local county schools.
To begin enrolling in Georgia Virtual Academy (GVA) your student must take a battery of tests online. Each tests gets increasingly more difficult. Once all the tests have been completed, the results are sent via internet to K12. They evaluate the test scores and place your child in the appropriate grade level of classes.
The testing process took about 4-6 hours.
K12 will send you a very large shipment of everything that is needed for your school year. If your economic circumstances are challenging you may qualify for a free computer they will send you.
We have re-enrolled our son for 6th grade this coming year. School year begins after Labor Day and goes to about June 10. Homework is controlled by you, you can assign nor not assign homework. The program does not assign homework.
Field trips occur during the year. Lake Lanier Islands for the end of year party.
Hope this helps.

eLearning Update: New Ga. Virtual School Approved - Digital ...
Yesterday, the Georgia Charter Schools Commission voted to approve four new charter schools, including one virtual K-12 campus, and increase per pupil funding for virtual students from $3,400 to $5,800, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution .
The new virtual school will be Georgia Connections Academy. The state already has three other virtual charter schools: Georgia Cyber Academy, which currently serves students in grades K-9 and will be up for a vote to include grades 10, 11, and 12 in January, and two other virtual schools that have already been approved by the commission but said they could not operate on the funds previously provided. With the increase of per-pupil funding, both virtual schools are expected to return to the state.
Georgia educators hope that this decision will bring the state to the forefront as a leader in virtual education.
"What we just did is to bring Georgia's educational system into the 21st century," Ben Scafidi, chairman...
