I just graduated from college and I'm currently considering a career as a high school counselor. Are there any high school counselors out there who can tell me what's it like to be one. Any advice or tips for me?

School Counselor Mr. Salas

Brief introduction on high school counselor Mr. Larry Salas.

What's the career path to become a high school counselor?

I'm currently studying Psychology, and have 2 semesters left before I'll have my AA in Social Science. Do you need a Masters to become a high school counselor, or just a bachelors?

Thanks for your information!

It really depends on what state you live in. For example in California to become a high school counselor you must obtain a Pupil Personnel Services Credential ( PPS), your B.A must be complete before entering a credential program. A masters degree is not an requirement, but most school districts offer a stipend for the masters. Call a local school district or district that you are interested in working for and ask their human resource department for specific details.

What kind of education or degree will I need to become a high school counselor?

I just got accepted to the University of Houston and I'm wondering what I have to do to become a high school counselor/ senior counselor.

Steps to Become a High School Guidance Counselor

* Earning a bachelor's degree: For those interested in how to become a high school guidance counselor, the first step is to obtain a bachelor's degree. Key courses that will help develop skills for this profession include psychology, communications and social sciences.
* Completing a master's degree: A master's degree or the completion of some graduate work is required by most states. Acceptable programs of study include secondary school counseling, education and related fields.
* Obtaining a counseling license: Most public school systems require a license for individuals who wish to become high school guidance counselors. To maintain the license, high school guidance counselors must complete continuing education credits.
* Obtaining a teaching certificate: Though requirements vary by state, some state systems require aspiring counselors to earn a teaching certificate. Some states also require individuals to have a few years of teaching experience prior to working as high school guidance counselors.
* Acquire school counseling certification: Many states require high school guidance counselors to obtain school counseling certification with the state. The guidelines for certification vary according to each state, but many states require a master's degree.

Required Skills
Active listening skills are needed to work as a high school guidance counselor with adolescent students who have academic and social interaction problems or need assistance with 'special needs.' There is a need to be 'problem sensitive' because to advocate and coach the student one must understand her/his situation at home.

Can you go to a high school counselor in CA and get advise on a situation in your personal life?

Lately I have been having some issues in my life outside of school and I dont know where else to go to get some advise. I was wondering if you can go to a high school counselor and get advise on a situation. Can they legally give advise?

Yeah, that's what their there for; its never illegal to ask someone for advice. But some counselors aren't very helpful, at least in my school...but if its bothering you a lot, anything's worth a shot.

How bad is your high school counselor?
IMG_0091

I am in my senior year of high school and all of my classmates agree, it's like she could care less that we even existed. We all think she sits at her computer and plays on MSN all day, and yes, we've actually seen her do that. When we're having problems she sends us to a different counselor, even though she's is suppose to interact with us, not the Freshmen counselor... Today I got my schedual and it was COMPLETELY messed up. Not only am I NOT in the classes I've signed up for *and PAID FOR* I'm not even in classes meant for my grade. I showed her my schedual and she said it wasn't her problem to fix, that I should have made it more clear on my sign up sheets... Other than directly go to the principal, I don't know what to do. If I don't take three of my seven classes, then I just threw 700 dollars down the toilet.

Mine's the exact same... but then again, we go to school together, don't we? Remeber last year when I bitch slapped that one girl? Two days later (after I'd already seen Mrs. THING) she asked me why I hadn't been in class... Then she said something about me being sick (no, I was in ISS... because YOU PUT ME THERE) She's just fan-fucking-tastic.

  • Counselor Barbara Martella; put kids ahead of her cancer

Barbara Martella, 57, of East Falls, a diligent high school counselor, died of cancer Monday at St. Luke's Hospice near Bethlehem, Pa.

In 2007, College Board official Robert J. Alig visited Lankenau High School in Upper Roxborough to observe Ms. Martella administer a PSAT test. Later he wrote about the experience for a College Board publication.

Ms. Martella was "clearly struggling" as they walked up three flights of stairs at the school, Alig said. She explained to him that she was in the midst of her third battle with cancer and had just had a round of chemotherapy the day before. She told Alig, "I cannot stop and spend the day at home today because we had to administer this test. We have to give these kids every possible chance to make it to college."

Ms. Martella joined Lankenau, a small special-admissions public high school, in 1999.

Three years later, doctors diagnosed lung cancer. She fought the disease aggressively even as it spread, her longtime

thequestionclub: Do you have any high school/college guid

I'm a senior in high school and applying to college and my counselor is the absolute WORST. She's the only one of the counselors who hasn't been keeping up with her seniors, she hasn't written my letter of recommendation yet, and she takes two fucking weeks to send out transcripts. There are also stories of her just flat out never sending transcripts out to certain colleges or for certain students that she doesn't like. She overbooks appointments constantly and then never reschedules. She's never in her office and people tell me all the time how they see her milling about the halls and chatting up the art teacher! I'd totally tell her off if I could get an appointment to see her. Bottom line is, applying to college is stressful as it is and she's just adding a world full of stress and anxiety onto it all. I graduated a year early from high school. I had an awesome guidance counselor who helped me through it, without him it would never have happened. I went to an ivy-league-feeder school...
