I want to become a freelance makeup artist but I'm not sure if I want to invest so much money in to school and I have no natural talent for makeup. I love make up and love to experiment on my own face but I wouldn't say I have the best hand at it. But that may come with practice. Anyone in the make up industry please help. Thank you in advance.
It's a combination of both. Although the industry isn't regulated, going to an artist school and getting a certificate will give you credibility. It is a worthwhile investment because it will give you automatic rapport with future clients.
This is an issue with piercers (and a lot of other industries). In some countries body piercers don't have to attend school, they can just open piercing shops and start punching holes in people. But if you attend a school and have that piece of paper on your wall that says you're educated, people will trust you.
School would be a worthwhile investment if you want to pursue this for your future. Through your education, you will learn to build a proper portfolio and then you'll be well on your way to building a successful business.
Makeup is sort of a natural thing, it does require a sense of colors, shading, tones and a steady hand. But a lot of these concepts can be taught in school - you just need to creativity to create your own looks.
Good luck.

I've always liked make-up, I'm not like amazing at application or anything. Sometimes my own makeup looks like crap.
But how much experience do you need to succeed in a make up artist school?
I recently thought I might do good in that field. Maybe with a little practice I could be really good at this.
There's a makeup school near me and I'm interested in getting into it, but I don't want to if I'm no where near good enough for it.
it really depends on the school. some will accept anyone, while others prefer you to have prior training. i suggest you give them a call and ask them if they require students to have experience with makeup.
to succeed in a makeup school it is more important that you are passionate about makeup, and are willing to work hard and listen to your trainers than it is for you to have lots of experience. a good school should teach you the skills, not expect you to know everything already.

I would love to learn how to be a make up artist....
I live in Los Angeles, California.
I was going to cosmetology school when I was a lot younger, but stopped due to the quality of the school. (teachers wouldn't show up, one was a major perv.)
Right now I'm attending jr. college so I can transfer to a 4 year. I'm studying graphic art and design, which I'm really good at, but I think that a lot of the other stuff-- like me failing math, and science-- is getting in the way.
So, Now that you have some background about me...
what are some of the best and most prestigious make up artist schools in Los Angeles or surrounding areas.
also-- what should I look for when choosing a school??
yea... um... i can't even pass algebra.
If you are considering special effects make up or anything for theater or film, your best bet would be either USC or UCLA's film schools. You would need to get into the PRODUCTION programs and then specialize in make up. USC.edu and UCLA.edu would have links to the film school's Web sites. Keep in mind that USC is still ranked the top film school in the nation and has a killer theater program as well in which you could apply your trade. Similarly, UCLA also has a great program that might be more affordable. Both schools are highly selective in terms of admission, but if your grades and educational history are good enough, you certainly could get in. Both offer great financial aid packages as well so don't let the cost--especially at USC--deter you from pursuing what you want to do.
How long are the courses to be a make up artist in Beauty school.
I'd like to be a professional make up atrist, so I wanna know how long the school program is,
a year or 2 years?
Thanks.
And also, any other information? Preferably from people who have been in beauty school for Cosmetology.
In my country ,the professional courses for bwauty school is almost 1 year.
Of courses,it's depended on youself to study.
I'm planning to go to make up school and I've been searching online with different schools. I noticed they all have different amount of hours as of learning. I was wondering if it matters how many hours you complete in makeup school. (It's confusing, I hope you understand) Thanks.
Each school is different. I know that with the esthetician course in the city I live in, its about 600 hours makeup time, plus the schooling. All in all, it comes out to be about 6 months of school.
