Former Recorder writer remembered | recorder, phillips, reporter ...
Mark Phillips, a reporter at The Recorder for more than 12 years in the 1980s and 1990s, died Dec. 23 at the age of 51.
Phillips was a general assignment reporter for The Recorder, beginning first with a summer job and then hired full-time after he graduated college.
“Mark was far more than just a reporter passing through Porterville,” noted Recorder Editor Rick Elkins, who hired Phillips. “He was a key member of the staff but what I most remember about him is his efforts in helping the city of Porterville earn All-America status in 1994.”
Phillips was born in Porterville, attended local schools and graduated from Monache High School. He attended the University of Santa Cruz for a while, eventually graduating from Fresno State University. The Recorder was his first newspaper job.
“He just loved writing. He loved working for the Recorder,” said his sister Mitzie Styles of Porterville.
Former City Manager Guy Huffaker always admired Phillips and worked with him on the city’s All-America presentation.
