Which is a better film school New York University or Emerson College?

I was recently accepted to both New York University and Emerson College. I am planning on studying film production. They are both really good schools. I love New York and I love Boston. From my research NYU is more expensive, but Emerson has much better campus housing. The only way that I can think to make my decision is to compare the film programs. So which one has a better film program, NYU or Emerson College?

NYU-Better rep, better connections---> easier to get a job when you graduate, better facilities, better location in the industry, more artistic, no campus

Emerson-More hands on approach, you will be making films quicker, only have to take film related classes, lower acceptance standards--> SOME of the people around you may not be as experienced and talented, more personal feel

What were your grades, SAT, extra curics btw?

New York Film School?

I am about to go to Uni in the UK. I want to get involved in making films and am thinking about the best place to go the New York Film school where the stars send their prodigies. I have looked but can not assatain the prices. How much is it to study there how hard is it to get in?

Hey Gael,

PROGRAM VALUE

With all due respect to Mr. Godard, we at the IFI, think it takes quite a bit more. Our intensive, hands on program is also comprehensive taking students from concept to marketing while working the practical steps in between. (first site)

Anyone looking to going to LA film school or New York film academy in September 2009?

Any looking to go to NYFA or LAFS at the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010??

New York Tisch School of Film?

Hey, I am Eigtheen and currently applying for university in the UK. However I really want to learn film making and am thinking about the Tisch School of Film...My A level grades are poor though they are predicted A (Business) - D (Geography and (E/DBiology)...would I even have a chance of getting into this american university? I ask because due to my grades my only other option is the New York Film Academy but they are very expensive. I know that as an international student at the Tisch I would have to financially support myself and my fees would not be waived...How can I apply and what are my chances?

It is a good school, and I would think that if you have a few good films that you have already made, you should be able to get in with those low grades.

Your best bet is to call the admissions counselor and see what they say initially.

Should I attend the North Carolina School of the Arts for film or a New York/LA based program?

NCSA is a four-year conservatory while the schools I'm looking at in NY and LA (New York Film Academy, LA Film School) have 1-2 year programs.

Ask about internships and job placement after graduation. What percentage of their students find jobs in the film industry within six months of graduation? What percent within a year following graduation? What kind of jobs are they finding and where are they working? What kind of job placement assistance does each school offer? The advantage of being based in NYC or L.A. is that you are right there where the jobs are. But if the school basically throws you out on the streets at graduation, that isn't much help. So ask a lot of specific questions about entering the job market following graduation.

Please welcome MultiMediaMouth’s newest contributor; Oren Soffer. Oren is currently in New York attending film school. In this new weekly series he’ll be sharing what he’s learning about filmmaking and considering how his course reflects the industry. For all you aspiring filmmakers, this should be an invaluable series.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker. Whether it was re-creating my favorite scenes from Star Wars or Jurassic Park in my backyard with toys or making short, asinine but amusing stop-motion animation videos with play-dough in middle school, I always felt driven by an undying love of cinema, and a burning desire to be a part of creating it. In high school, I was lucky enough to go to a school that offered a film studies program. It was there that I got my first hands-on, real filmmaking experience, making commercials, music videos, exercises and short films. In retrospect, they were pretty bad, but it was just the type of experience I needed to convince myself that this was what I wanted to do with my life. When the time came to apply to consider my higher education options and apply to colleges, I had to make a decision, one that many aspiring filmmakers in the past and in the present have to make: To film school, or not to film school?
