Hi, I'm Tina Bredder. I have been running "Bathtubs For the Blind," a non-for-profit organization dedicated to providing bathtubs to the visually impaired, for almost a year now. It all started back in 2007 when my elderly mother, who is partially blind in both eyes, tripped and broke her knee while trying to get into the bathtub. Slipping in the bathtub is dangerous enough for people who can see what they're doing. Therefore, it is about 10 times as dangerous for someone like my mother. My mother lost her vision in 2006 at the age of 80. She refuses to have a nurse take care of her, or to live in a retirement home, so I wanted to respect her wishes. After her fall, I knew I had to make her bathtub more accessible for her needs. She routinely bathes twice a day. That's plenty of chances for her to fall down. My mind quickly went to work. My mother has since learned to read braille. My friend, Beth works at the Perkins School for the Blind (famous for it's association with Helen Keller). She has a braille machine, and I asked her if she could make braille labels for the bathtub. She said of course. She sent them to me, and I stuck them onto the bathtub. I labeled the sides, the spigot, the soap dish, everything. I then drew up plans of putting in special censors that can tell when a person is entering the tub. If the person falls with the right impact, an alarm goes off and an ambulance is automatically called. I have since manufactured these "Tina Tubs" and they are not the cheapest items to make, if you can imagine. The trouble is, nobody seems to be that aware of this problem that blind people face every time they bathe. Me and my staff have tried so many things to spread our company's message, but nobody seems to be paying attention. Do you think a website could work? A lot of people are doing that internet advertising it seems. What ideas do you think could work? Do you support my cause? I know that if you care about the blind, then you will say, "Yes, Tina. Of course we support your cause."
Thank you,
Tina Bredder
