Dear all.
I was wondering if you, especially those in the know, would be able to tell me, what, in your opinion, is the most prestigious/professional/highly apt photography school in the world. Obviously you may differ in opinions and evidently many photography (schools/courses accompanying university) are equally reputable, but thank you for you opinions anyway.
I agree with the list Beachsaint gave you. A couple of other great schools are Brooks Institute in California. Daytona Beach Community College has a two-year program that is highly regarded. I know some graduates of the Savannah College of Art and Design that say it is a wonderful program.

When I finish highschool I really want to take photography in college. Do you think it would be better to take it at an art school or a school thats just for photography?
I'm with Ant... I've had plenty of students on placements with me and many haven't been taught essential basics - if you don't get the basics in place you are really going to struggle at some stage.
I'd go to photography school where you will get in-depth teaching from dedicated specialists... arts folks sometimes look down on photography - if that's the case it's not a great place to learn if you have that kind of mindset to overcome.
Good luck.

ok so in hooked on photography and I'm a senior in high school. So what colleges would you consider to look into?
I love that I chose to attend college for photography, it really helped me attain knowledge and skills I was able to employ when I got hired by a photographer 6 days after graduating!
While I'm not sure where you are located in the US, I fully recommend the Antonelli Institute of Art & Photography in Erdenheim, PA. (It's basically Philadelphia, but in an extremely beautiful, nice area called Chestnut Hill). They offer an Associates Degree with their two year program, and they only offer Photography and Graphic Arts courses of study, so it's also an extremely small school with maybe 200 students at most combined. Great teachers, and you really get to know and befriend everyone around the school. When I was looking around I liked Antonelli the best as I knew I wanted to Major in Photography and didn't want to have to worry about taking extraneous classes I didn't need. In their course study, all you take is photography classes, about 5 each semester, plus one class ea. semester aimed at educating you on understanding the business side. The first year is strictly B&W film...35mm and 4x5. The second year is color with digital. Some of the classes include Portrait, Commercial, Fashion, Photojournalism...such a great balance, imo.
The cost isn't so bad, not in comparison to some other art schools around, plus it's only 2 years so no need to worry about paying for "foundation" year nor books for English, Math, yadda yadda. The main expenses you will encounter are for supplies, film, printing paper, digital camera your second year, etc.
Visit: http://www.antonelli.edu if you would like further information! :) Best of luck to you and I hope you find the best school that suits you!
Let's say that you go to school for photography. What kind of career can you get from that?
Lots of choices actually!
Wedding photographer
Newspaper photographer
Real estate/Survey photographer
Independent photographer
And so on!
I remember seeing a book in the bookstore in the career section that talked about various photographic careers. Check your local bookstore or on Amazon.
We found this photography school in DC that has a one year program for a certificate. It is about $7000. My wife has a little bit of a background in photography and never finished college and is having a baby soon.
Would the certificate be helpful in her having a career doing portraits, weddings etc. or should she just take some classes and not do the program. We are thinking a four year degree isn't really an option at this point which is why the one year of night classes sounded appealing.
Please help! We want to know of anybody who went to a photography school and got a certificate or any photographers advice.
Thank you!
If you are a mediocre photographer, no degree, certificate, diploma, etc., in the world will do you any good. If you're a good photographer, school will help, but won't make your career.
Have her put together a portfolio of her work and have her show it to any local studios that might be looking for photographer's assistants.
Having a certificate, etc. may help get her in the door, but a portfolio of outstanding work will get her further. If she is a good photographer, and she wants to hone her skills before getting into the business, then go through the program. If she can put together an outstanding portfolio new, then do that and look at getting any formal training once she is a working professional.
