Power School

My brother is in the navy power school and will be moving on to the "hands-on" training school in late july 2007 until jan. 2008 where he will be either on a sub or aircraft carrier. He won't know where he will be based or if he'll be on a sub or ship until he graduates in jan. 2008. Knowing that, I'm planning on getting married sometime in the summer of 2008. But my brother doesn't know if he'll be able to leave in order to attend my wedding. He has asked some of the higher officers at the navy power school and they've basically told him he probably won't be able to leave, and that it all depends on where he'll be based. Is there any way we can find out in advance so I can plan my wedding accordingly? If he requests a leave or liberty for one day for my wedding, will he be allowed? Help! I'm holding off my wedding so my one and only brother can be there!

Since he knows when he will graduate, why not get married a couple of days after that.

He will most likey get leave after he finish's school, before he reports to his first duty station.

And he would know if he will be on a sub, has he went to the sub school in conneticut?

The problem with a summer wedding is, first, your brother has no idea where he will be stationed at by then,

And even after he finds out where he will be based, he won't know the deployment schedule of his unit.

And his future unit, does not know its deployment schedule for the summer of 2008 now either.

So your choices are, either wait untill he's out of school to set your wedding date.

Set your wedding date for right after he finish's school.

Or set your wedding date and hope he can make it, but realise that he might not be able to make it.

I couldn't make my dads retirement when he retired after 30 years in the Army. I was in Guam the day he retired.

And thats another thing to think about, what if your brother is stationed in Japan or Guam ?

Commercial flights cost several thousand dollars round trip.

Space available travel on military aircraft is an option, but from personal experiance, its hard, very hard to do space available from japan or guam back to the states and then back to your unit.

I will be back from OCS at the end of September of this year and will head down to SC to start Nuclear Power School shortly thereafter. I was wondering if anyone knew how much time students typically get off for the major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter) at Nuclear power school and/or prototype. Thanks in advance.

Thanksgiving - 2 days (R/F)
X-mas - typically stand-down lasts 10-14 days, broken into 2 sections
Easter - ? was not there

I am considering enlistment for the Nuclear Power program in the Navy. I am married with one 8 month old and I'm wanting my wife and son to live in Charleston while I'm in school. However, I'd like her to be a stay-at-home-mom if possible.
a) Is it possible financially?
b) Will the military provide for her housing at all?

I agree with the other posters. It could provide you with a good start on a career, but if she isn't in agreement 100%, your marriage and/or your schooling will be a wash out.

I also wonder why you want to work around nuclear radiation? One mistake can be fatal or life changing.

You may be the best and the brightest, but even the best and the brightest can wash out due to unanticipated circumstances. Will she stay by you through long deployments? You'd better get her to sign on.

I'd look at your best alternatives and weigh the pros and cons of each option that you have. If she needs your emotional support on a daily basis, I'd walk away from this opportunity.

If you are uncertain, I'd enlist the help of a marriage counselor to assess the pros and cons of your different opportunities.

By the way, verbal and even written promises to you can be disregarded and the pleasure of the Navy based on their needs. Your opinion of the Navy may change, but they can keep you in the military much longer than you want. You don't have much legal recourse.

I am an EE major at Drexel University, and I am wondering if I have a chance at becoming a Power School Instructor.

You do not have to be an MIT grad.

Regardless of what schooling you had before the Navy, you can go to Nuclear Power school, if you score high enough. It has no connection to what college you attended previously.

Any Nuc who has served a full sea tour can go back to school and become an instructor. Instructor duty is a 3-year tour, then back to sea duty.

You can not make a career out of being an instructor.

In the civilian world:
Those who can, do. Those who can not, teach.

In the Navy:
Those who can do and teach. Those who can not, leave.

My girlfriend and I have intentions to get married. She will be going to Charleston SC for nuclear power school after she completes OCS. Is it a good idea to move with her to Charleston.
1. Will she be able to get an apartment with me off base.
2. How much time realistically will we have together per week.
3. Would we need to be married at the time for her to get an apartment off base

no you can not move down with her and no she can not live off base
unless your married you will never live with her

3 yes you have to be married to live with her
also the first portion of nuke school she is not permitted to do anything
and has to live in barracks

get married and join her at her first permanent duty station

nuke school is very demanding
she needs to focus
learn opsec too
learn to not ask her questions she can not tell you anything

i married a nuke
you will rarely see her
nukes are first on the ship and last off
as a female she will go to a carrier women cant serve on subs
