Where can I find the primary school curriculum and standards for 7 year old children?

My 7 year old has had a spanish only (English taught as foreign language 2 times per week) education since the age of 3. We are returning to New Zealand next year and I would like to begin to prepare him for entry into school. I need to find out what the standards are for his age, and what is being taught for this age. Thanks

Contact the school your child will be attending and ask for information regarding their overall averages for student attendance, grades, and discipline records as well as a copy of their handbook. The school may have online copies of these records or they may require you to pay postage for them to send you the copy. Also ask them questions regarding the classes that he will be taking at that school as well as what each class requires.

What do you think should be included in the British primary school National Curriculum?

A new National Curriculum should be introduced next year (might not happen with the new Con-Dem though) so which subjects could be included to give pupils a more rounded education? I think geography should be swapped for a more beneficial subject at primary school. Any suggestions?

Call me old fashioned, but I think that any subject that teaches respect, both to other people and to property, should be very high on the list.

Hope this helps, but I do feel we are loosing the ability to show and have respect these days.

I dont! you think teaching children to lie is fine, well i dont! you think teaching children utter crap and nonsense that you dont even believ in yourself is okay (like christmas and god and jesus and the three merry men!!) well i dont! you bring your children up to be confused, we bring out children up to know right from wrong!

The KS 1 English curriculum is here http://curriculum.qcda.gov.uk/key-stages -1-and-2/subjects/english/keystage1/inde x.aspx
and KS2 here http://curriculum.qcda.gov.uk/key-stages -1-and-2/subjects/english/keystage2/inde x.aspx
You will find that http://www.parentsintouch.co.uk has lots of pages on teaching English and advice on preparation for SATS.

Want to have knowledge on primary school curriculum esp. math in Australia?

As a parent I am interested in teaching methods regarding primary level math. What are the standards expected for a grade three student.
Reading level, handwriting etc are all secondary questions I have.
thanks
extended:
Is there a difference between the methods we studied and the methods that children follow at school. Will it confuse if we teach in traditional methods?
What are the homework books I can use for a grade three child ?
Where can I buy a handwriting practice book (Vic) for a child who is starting to link ( left hander).
Please help.

VELS - Victorian Essential Learning Standards - basically describes what a child is expected to achieve at each stage. Stage 3 is for grades 3-4 so a child in Grade 3 should be doing the stage 2 tasks confidently and beginning to learn the stage 3 tasks.

In terms of curriculum, the school can cover the stages of VELS in any way they choose. Some schools use traditional methods; others might follow the IB PYP.

Handwriting is similar - there is a Victorian script but some schools do not follow it. You could talk to the school you are interested in and ask about this.

  • Update On Primary-School Ethics Classes (NSW And Beyond)

In 2004, I attended a Level 2 training course in Philosophy for Children, with about fifteen other teachers, attending lectures and workshops run by practitioners,  including Dr Cam. At the FAPSA conference, he did a short presentation about the state’s 10-week trial for secular ethics classes , which has caught some media attention – so I hoped to clear up a few misconceptions about the trial and whether it was, as some claimed, really ‘in competition’ with religious education classes.

Late last year I got an email forwarded to me from Cam, in regards to nationwide (and including New Zealand) efforts to allow materials to be available across the country, not just NSW. That body is Primary Ethics , and the board has asked Cam to chair a primary school Curriculum Development Committee. It includes representatives of Philosophy in Schools associations in Australia and New Zealand, which have an interest in developing such a curriculum. In response, the Board proposed the following:
