Can a secondary school put cctv cameras in the toilets?

My sons secondary school has put cctv cameras in the toilets, i am very annoyed at this is there anything i can do?
They are not dummies they are real

They can put them in the toilet area, but not pointing into privacy area's ie cubicles and urinals, due to privacy. They should also put signage up that the camera's are there but this is not law, They MUST have a policy, for what will happen to the footage, ie it's overwritten every x amount of days, and any films being held for what ever period must have correct storage which must be in secure lockable area, under the data protection act you are entitled to see any data that has been compiled. If the school is operating covert (hidden) filming again there must be written instruction that this is there policy. I would write to the school, politely (write not phone, as a call is not recorded, a letter will be kept on record) Express your concern, and ask for a copy of the data protection policy, and any other policies which relate to the use of cameras within the school, keep it calm, keep it polite you could also ask to see the welfare policy.

is having CCTV cameras in school an invasion of privacy?

Our school has just installed CCTV in the corridors, can anyone tell me if this is and invasion of privacy?

Yes, of course it is. CCTV cameras in schools are the 1st step towards becoming a Totalitarian state! Some people might say that they are there to protect you, but there is no proven link between CCTV cameras and a reduction in crime. Also images recorded can be sent off without permission! Big brother is watching you!

What do you think about this? CCTV in school bathrooms?

Firstly sorry if this question is a bit long but there is a lot to explain.
I'm 16 and i am attending secondary school in Ireland. For those of you who may not know, secondary school is for teenagers aged around 12 to 18, and my school has around 850 students.
The story is, wee had a week off at the end of October, on returning to school, cctv cameras had been put into every single bathroom in the school, boys and girls. the cameras are placed up on the walls, and are the type that are circular shaped covered in a dark glass, so there is no way of knowing what way it is pointing. We were told they were installed to prevent bullying and vandalism. i havnt heard of any bullying taking place and the vandalism is only minor. we were also told they are pointing towards the sinks, and not the cubicles, but they are in the boys bathrooms as well, and the rooms are very small surely they are not legal.
Apparently, it took our principal a long time to convince the board of management to be able to put them in, and the thing that annoys me the most is he didnt consult the student council, who represent all students. he just told them he was installing them and said to not tell anyone.

My question is what do other teenagers think of this? and has anything like this happened in your school?

Most people i know think it is a complete invasion of privacy, there is already cameras in every hallway, is that not enough?
The students are protesting tomorrow, and the protest was approved by the parents association.
i wouldnt mind but most of the toilets dont even have toilet seats, or soap. and from what im told in the boys bathrooms they are pinting at the urinals

I'm sure that it is illegal to have cameras in the toilets. Make the parents and students of the school sign a petition or something, because you're absolutely right - its a complete invasion of privacy.

At my old seconday school, we came back from the summer holidays and they actually put windows in the doors (the actual door, not a cubicle) of the toilet. Sure, it might be good because it prevents bullying and skiving from lessons - but I remember that we had no privacy in the girl's toilets. Boys would peep through and vice versa. Worst of all was that there was a window in the door of the boy's toilet, and apparently, if you looked in the right direction > you could see a guy peeing :O

Anyway, its totally unfair and wrong. Ask your parents to contact the main board of management to make them reconsider?

xx

Should there be mandatory CCTV cameras in schools to protect both teachers and pupils?

I feel strongly that cameras are needed as some teachers as well as pupils can behave very badly and get away with it as they believe that they are untouchable. My son has been bullied by both staff and pupils, but the school won't do anything about it, regardless of the fact that he has many witnesses. There are a couple of cameras, none in the classrooms, and even though an incident occured in a corridor where there was CCTV, the school refused to even check the camera for evidence! The Education Department are very unhelpful, what else can i do?

Document each and every incident. Make sure you include date, time, place (exact place in the school), who was there as witnesses and who were the predators, what happened, who you reported the incident to and their response. Now take all of this to a lawyer and file a civil suit for negligence or harassment or whatever for big bucks, make sure to sue the teachers, naming each one, the principal, and the Board of Education naming the president and all other board members (this way they cannot pass the buck IE: its not my job.) and see how fast they start to listen and react to your complaints or how they make your child's school life more difficult. Most Lawyers do not charge for the initial consultation and will take a case on a contingency of the potential settlement ( this ensures you that they will not be taking a case they feel they are going to lose as they will make no money). Whatever keep documenting. Good Luck people like these should not be in charge of our children and not be helpful. Cameras are sometimes there only for show not for use due to the expense. The cameras you refer to may only be for show and not have any real use except to deter any unwanted behavior.

  • Parking CCTV to target school run mums - News - gethampshire

TRAFFIC wardens will be using CCTV spy cameras to catch people parking illegally in Aldershot and Farnborough town centres.

Mums stopping on yellow lines to drop the kids off to school or people stopping in taxi ranks to use cash machines will be in the frame.

They will never even see a traffic warden. They will instead be filmed and have the video of their transgression posted to them, along with a fine of up to £70.

Rushmoor Borough Council currently rakes in around £200,000 a year in parking fines and expects that figure to rise to a whopping £350,000 next year.

The scheme, put forward by borough parking officials, would raise more than £1million over seven years, the council’s own figures show.

Part of the cash would be used to pay for a new CCTV control room in Farnborough to cover both towns.

Digital cameras and monitors will cost around £200,000. Rushmoor has had a new security camera system on its shopping list for years. It was left high and dry after negotiations to share a new control room with neighbouring Hart District Council fell through.
