What are some questions that elementary school students can easily do, but harder for middle school students?

I need some questions that might be easy for an elementary school student to do, but harder for someone in middle school. The grades of that question for elementary school would be kindergarten through sixth. Middle school would be seventh and eighth. If you can't think of any at the top of your head, please give me a good website in which I can find some questions. The questions/problems can involve easy math questions, or random questions or something. Thank you and best answer WILL be chosen!

Work at TEAM Schools - Kindergarten

Carrie Jolley is one of the founding teachers at TEAM's first elementary school, SPARK Academy.

Can you deduct elementary school tuition from your taxes?

We would like to send our child to a private elementary school in a couple of years. The tuition is 12K. We will probably have an income of 100K at that time. Can you deduct elementary school education from your taxes or are there any tax breaks for this type of thing?
Shoot. We'll just have to apply to one of the magnet schools. 12k is tough with no tax breaks.

No, it's your choice, and your dime.

What do elementary school teachers have to do at the end of the school day?

I'm curious about this because I want to teach elementary and even with all the fieldwork and student teaching I've done in college I still wonder if at the end of the day when all the kids have gone home, is that the end of the day for the teachers as well? Or does the principal expect you to volunteer for after school programs, do you stay in your room and do lesson planning?

I'm an elementary teacher and no our work day doesn't end when the kids go home (most people assume this, so don't worry.) Our contract (in my district) states that we have to remain on campus a minimum of 30 minutes after school's out. Most of us stay longer to grade papers, plan lessons, prep for the next day, etc. We usually do not "volunteer" for after school programs although we do have assigned duties that are handed out at the beginning of the year by the principal. Also, districts generally offer professional development classes after school, which helps when we update our credentials (according to NCLB.) Good luck in your journey! It's a rewarding career. :-)

What materials does an elementary school teachers use throughout the day?

I have a friend who just graduated and is about to be looking for jobs as an elementary school teacher. I want to give her a little graduation/christmas gift and thought it would be nice to make a gift basket of materials or useful things she would enjoy using. I would love to hear what other elementary school teachers use supplies/material wise throughout the day, and what nice things at home would you also enjoy?

That is a great idea. To add to the list of the previous poster, I would include more name tags (you can never have to many), good sturdy scissors in different sizes, clear contact paper in a roll (from Walmart. etc.), clear packing tape rolls.

I would avoid teacher inspiration books, the kind with quotes about how great it is to be a teacher. You can usually find them in the checkout or bargain section of B&N. Something that would really be helpful would be a great book on classroom discipline or a book for new teachers. My favorite is "The First Day of School" by Harry Wong.

Try to avoid anything that the school may provide for your friend, i.e. pencils, white-out, paperclips, lesson plan books, chalk.

What is a day in the life of an Elementary School Teacher like?

A few months ago I made a career change and decided to become a teacher. I currently teach an after school program. The thing is, this position isn't really letting me know what it's like to be an elementary school teacher in the school board. I have many questions:
1. Besides teaching your specific grade, are you also required to do extracurricular activities with children after school? Such as drama club, etc.?
2. Are you required to do fundraising for your school?
3. Are you required to put on events like school plays, etc.?
4. Must part of your day be in the school library or cafeteria for a school period?
5. Are there enough free periods to grade papers and lesson plan while students are at other class periods like gym, art, computers, etc.?
What I really want to know is, besides your actual classes, what else happens or is expected of you as a teacher throughout the day or year?
Answers from teachers in the school board and who teach elementary will be most helpful.

1. We are not required to do extracurricular activities, but it certainly provides a sense of fulfillment (and looks good to administration).
2. Teachers are required to allow their students' families to participate in PTO fundraising events. We're generally required to attend fundraising events (like fall festivals) unless we've got a good excuse.
3. We're not required to put on events, but again, it looks good to administration and provides the community a chance to see what's going on in school.
4. That depends on the school. At my school, we're not required to sign our students up for scheduled library time, but a good teacher makes sure students have the opportunity to access library books on a regular basis. I have to take my students to lunch and stay with them during the lunch period. It's only considered a break in that I can eat lunch with other teachers.
5. I have 45 minutes of planning each day. It's never enough. I rarely, if ever, actually plan during this time. It's basically my time to pee, check school email, clean up from the morning, and get ready for the afternoon. SOMETIMES I get a chance to grade papers. This is also the time that various required meetings are scheduled. My actual planning is usually done on Sunday evenings. I plan for the week and make adjustments throughout the week as needed.

I share an assistant with 4 other teachers. I use her during my Reading class. Depending on what grade you teach and where you teach, your assistant situation will differ. The younger grades (K-2) usually have their own assistants or only share with one other teacher. Sometimes the upper grades (5,6) will have to share an assistant, which makes it virtually impossible for them to use the assistant with students. They often just use assistants for clerical work.

Most schools require each teacher to have some sort of duty- monitoring students in the morning before they go to class, assisting with buses in the morning and afternoon, or helping with car riders. At my school we only have this duty once a week, and it generally lasts for 10-15 minutes. We're also all on some sort of committee that usually meets once a month after school. It's not difficult, and it's not too time-consuming, but a lot of times it feels like a waste of time.

The part of my job that I dislike the most would have to be paperwork. It's hard to remember all of the little (but somehow important) things I have to turn in to someone. Being organized is not my strong suit, so without a calendar and constant access to my school email, I'd be screwed.

Overall though, it's really not that bad. If you like working with kids and you like teaching (and in the process learning yourself), then elementary teaching is a great career.

  • Cleansing Fire – Yoga Being Taught at Brighton Elementary School

Yoga refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines that originated in India. The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Within Hinduism, it refers to one of the six orthodox (astika) schools of Hindu philosophy, and to the goal towards which that school directs its practices. In Jainism, yoga is the sum total of all activities — mental, verbal and physical. I don’t remember too many soaring flamingoes, though. Some of my students looked as if they were soaring and their hair might have been pink but they didn’t look like flamingoes.

I wonder if they would consider recitation of the Rosary as a meditative exercise -or maybe 15 minutes of the Jesus Prayer?

I hope the school gets a chance to squeeze-in a little reading and writing in between yoga periods.

We had a principal who was all in favor of having “mind and body” days every so often.

Lord! the nonsense that goes on in our schools is sometimes just as bad as what happens in church.
