How do you follow the TX home school laws with "unschooling" if the law says you need a written curriculum?
(Untitled)

I am starting to home-school my six year old this year and want to make sure I am following the laws in Texas. I know "unschooling" is a form of homeschooling and there is not a law against it, but I need to know how to go about "unschooling" when according to TX laws, a written curriculum must be followed. How does one accomplish this?

Hello. I also live in Texas and homeschool my son.

Here's the bottom line - you need to follow state laws and regulations but that doesn't mean that you CAN'T teach the unschooling approach.

I am familiar with Texas homeshool laws - luckily, this state imposes very little regulations on homeschoolers and the regulation you're referring to is the one that states:

"A written curriculum consisting of reading, spelling, grammar, math, and a course in good citizenship while operating as a private school [is required]."

Ready for the most important paragraph of my response? Here it is:

No matter what teaching approach (classical, CM, unit studies, unschooling, etc.) you want to take is totally up to you, but...you...must..comply...with...state regulations...period.

The way you asked your question, I don't see a conflict between unschooling (from what I know about this approach) and having a written curriculum.

REMEMBER - the Texas law NEVER states how SPECIFIC you have to be in documenting your written curriculum so you have plenty of leeway on how you want to document it.

For example, I would just have a heading for each of the Texas required topics (reading, spelling, grammar, math, and citizenship), and under each one, provide some general bullet points on what you plan to teach - no need to produce an encylopedia here, just some general high-level points on what you think ought to be taught.

Some final words, don't forget that unschooling is more of a "how" to teach rather than a "what" to teach. Since Texas is asking you as the home school teacher to document "what" you are teaching, it is totally up to you on "how" you will teach the topics. Therefore, unschooling and Texas homeschool laws can co-exist without any conflict.

If you want a quick refresher on home school state regulations, I would recommend that you visit my website - Yahoo community group guidelines prevent me from posting that here, but you can easily get my website address by looking at my profile (just click into my icon).

To find the specific article I'm referring to, go my site and in the Articles section, read the article titled, "Home Schooling Regulations".

Hope this helps.

Law School is like Freakin' High School! (Law School DVD)

Another funny chapter from the DVD "All About Law School." This is the first ever documentary feature film made about the law school ...

If you attend an Ivy for grad school, law school or med school, are your kids legacies?
John Yoo comix

I was wondering. I attended MIT for grad school but not for undergrad, would my kids count as legacies if they apply to MIT?

If someone attends Harvard for law school, business school or med school but does not go there for undergrad, will their kids count as legacies?

My dad went to Harvard for medical school, but a state university for undergrad. When we went to a Harvard information session, I asked if I would be considered a legacy. They told me i wouldn't be, so I guess it would be the same for MIT.

Does going to two different schools for undergrad and law school make sense?
police car

I want to go to UGA, probably the best school in Georgia, for my undergraduate degree.. For graduate school (law school), I want to go to Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois.. Does this make sense? In GA, i can get the Hope Scholarship for full tuition to UGA and my parents would pay for Law School in Evanston.. Is this reasonable? Is there an alternative? Good plan? help.

I would say that a majority of students in law school did not attend the undergraduate school associated with that law school. It is interesting to note that once you venture into the "elite" law schools, you will see a lot of familiar undergraduate schools being represented, i.e., Brown, University of Pennsylvania, Berkeley, and etc. I would also recommend going to a different law school than your undergraduate because it extends your network. A Northwestern JD will make you marketable through out the US, but a UGA undergrad degree will solidify your roots in Georgia should you want to return after graduating from law school. I know that Washington D.C. law firms are notorious for looking for a connection between their 1L and 2L interns and D.C. This connection can vary, for example, you may have gone to Georgetown undergrad or your grew up in the D.C. Metro area.

As a side note, Northwestern Law School is located in the heart of Chicago. The undergraduate university is located in Evanston. So, the full-ride scholarship at UGA may make financial sense because Northwestern Law is in an expensive neighborhood of Chicago.

Best of luck on your apps.

High School Law unpaid internship in Houston?
JIBC car

I'm a high school sophomore with knowledge of computer programming and experience as a receptionist at Back to Balance Chiropractic Clinic. I don't care if I'm paid or not. I just want the experience in a law firm because I want to major in law. I'm in the top ten(not percent) of my class holding office in various clubs/activites. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Thanks so much.

www.craigslist.org usually has some internships posted in the legal/paralegal field of the respective city's job section.

Also, call around to law offices. There are many that would be willing to allow you to intern, because it is free and legal cheap labor.

Good Luck!
