British School of Motoring - BSM Driving School/Lessons on Watchdog

BSM's unrealistic statistics, no tax disc on driving test, WTF? Bullshit School of Motoring! lol

what is the difference between a driving school and a school of motoring?

There is no difference; it's just two different ways of saying the same thing, and the school's owner decides which they like the sound of best, or which fits the name of the school best.

Anyone used Neasden School of Motoring?

Are they any good? If not recommend an alternative in North West London. If you haven't used them, again, recommend an alternative in North West London. Thanks.

Yeh, i recommend it. Its average expense, and my friends mum passed on her second try after 3/4 of a year. Anywhere is good though to be honest because its your work that makes you pass not the teachers. My advice is to not look for the right company, but to look for a teacher that suites you, and doesnt waste time to make more money. You basically want a good teacher, so that is what you should look for. I dont know any that are worth the money, as my auntie wastes her time all the time.

Question for all old school motor heads like me?

i used to know but forgot of course, here is the Q what yr did Chevy produce the fiber glass body on the Corvette instead of the steel.Thanks.

i beleave they started useing fiberglass in 54 or 55.and people who dont know the first corvettes were made from steal.

Which driving school do you recommend that is cheap in Sheffield?

I live in Sheffield and currently with Relax School of Motoring but am on £20 per hour. I need reliable cheaper lessons that will help me pass my theory and practical test.

I was considering to call AA driving school and BSM driving school but don't know which one to consider.

Well as someone who owns a driving school, I can assure you that "cheap" does not necessarily equate to "reliable".

Neither the AA or BSM are going to be cheaper than what you already have...(unless they are running a special offer in your area) - if not, both schools prices are always at the TOP end of the market - well over £20.

In the case of BSM, as BSM is also a driving instructor training company, they use an EXTREMELY high proportion of trainee instructors (up to 50% of BSM instructors are trainees). A trainee driving instructor has passed the first two of the three driving instructor qualifying exams, which are the Theory Test and an advanced driving test. They have NOT passed the hardest test (and the one that most potential driving instructors fail), the test of ability to teach...so you could end up with an instructor who can drive very well, but isn't necessarily much good at teaching. The trainee licence is only granted for a period of 6 months, so your "instructor" may end up having to stop teaching you before you get as far as taking your test. So if you're considering BSM, it's worth asking whether you'll be getting a fully qualified instructor or a trainee. Trainee driving instructors are also rarely supervised well...(no matter who they train with) :(

The AA do not use trainees.

The fact that BSM and the AA are national driving schools does NOT guarantee that they will be any more or less reliable than any other driving school or instructor.

The BEST way of finding a reliable instructor, is by personal recommendation. Ask your friends, family, neighbours, work colleagues etc - can any of them recommend someone they learnt with?

If not, have a look at the link I give below for some more tips of what to look for in a driving instructor...

But £20 per hour is pretty reasonable for driving lessons....my instructors charge £25 per hour (we're in the south of England)...we have an excellent reputation because we believe in quality and excellent customer service, so we have no problems whatsoever getting pupils.

Remember, the BEST instructors are BUSY...no matter how much they charge...because they're good and effective at what they do.

A good driving instructor will save you money in the long run as you are likely to need fewer lessons....even if that means they are not "cheap".

Cheap prices mean the instructor has to work longer hours to make the same money as someone charging the market rate - so they may bump up their income by telling you you need more lessons than you actually do, or spend ages at the side of the road talking rather than driving to cut down on fuel costs and wear and tear or may just have to work so hard and so long that the quality of their teaching is affected as they are just plain tired out...

Virtually all driving instructors are self employed whether they are with a big school or not (they work as franchisees NOT employees), so they do not get a regular weekly wage - they only get paid for however many lessons they do.

As for the Theory Test, you can do that yourself! Read the HIghway Code and get yourself some suitable software to practice the Theory Test questions and the Hazard Perception video clips. You can buy suitable CD Roms from any of the big supermarkets for between £5-£10 (these often include the Highway Code as well!). Then practice makes perfect...practice until you consistently score well over the pass marks for each part and then you should be ready for your Theory Test.

Good luck :)
