What is the difference between a unified school district and an independent one?
DSC02394

When I lived in Kansas, the school districts were unified school districts, and here in Texas I`ve noticed the schools are ISDs. What is the difference, or isn't there one?

I know this has nothing to do with your question but I Love your picture. Where'd you get it from?

Is it right for the Oakland Unified School District to charge applicants $81 for fingerprinting?
DSC02395

It's not just substitute teachers who are required to pay this- even Instructional Assistants and office clerks. Yet the school district pays as low as $9 an hour!
Do other school districts charge this much?

it is common practice-inmy state it is not the school district charge-it is charged by the fingerprinting agency to process the printrs. Some jobs will cover teh costs-but many do not...and it shoudl only be required if theya re actually offering you the job pending passing the print check---not just all applicants

What are the Vacations like for Fundamental Schools in the Corona-Norco unified school district in California?

Are you talking about a Jr. High? CFIS? What do you mean vacations? The field trips? The only ones I went to going to that school were the ones to the San Diego Wild Animal Park with a club I was in.

What are your thoughts about elementary schools in the Palo Alto Unified School District?
DSC02399

Are the schools too academic/focused on test scores? Or is the curriculum more balanced and focused on the whole child?

Is the bureaucracy heavy or agile?

Are class sizes too large for individual instruction?

We're trying to decide on PAUSD or private for elementary schools. Any thoughts from those who've been through it would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The Palo Alto schools are good for CA elementary schools. Some are better than others such as Nixon which is populated with Stanford prof's kids.

Still, those who can afford it, and who can get in, are overwhelmingly choosing private school options. Even with foundation money, the public schools just can't compete resource wise. Also, the PA middle schools are a problem, but getting a kid into a top private at middle school level is very hard so having them in from K can be a help. If you have girls you may try out the public school and pray for Castilleja for 6th grade on.

And if you're a typical PA family thinking about college already, compare the college placement of Paly or Gunn to Menlo or Casti--pathetic!

What was the first day of school in 1998 for San Diego Unified Schools?
DSC02372

Not year round. Does anyone know a pattern for it? Or if it always starts in the first week? On a specific weekday?

Schools usually start the first week either the week before or after Labor Day. The board of Education decides which day every year t their meeting. There is no real formula.

  • LA Unified moves to reconstitute Jordan High School | 89.3 KPCC

An employee said there was a mood of certainty at Jordan High School in Watts Wednesday. Los Angeles Unified’s superintendent moved this week to reconstitute the low-performing school in the coming months and force teachers and staff to reapply for their jobs.

Outside Jordan High, Jackilene Alvarez praised the education her three children have received at the school. She has a tenth and twelfth grader at Jordan.

Another daughter graduated with high grades two years ago and has a clerical job, she said.

Alvarez added that gangs and their influence are a bigger problem. She said a teacher helped straighten out her son last year when he was getting into trouble.

The school district argues that Alvarez’s experience is the exception to the rule. Sixty-five percent of Jordan High’s students drop out, while very few test proficient in English and math.

The teachers union says district headquarters has done little to support teacher improvement efforts. The superintendent says he’ll recruit outside entities to help run Jordan High as three separate learning academies on the same campus.
