I've been searching everywhere for ideas. I will be at the performance the last of this month. How dressed up or casual will most be?

Not too casual and not too dressed up; somewhere in between is fine. A nice pair of jeans, nice shoes and a nice sweater and jacket or something and you'll be fine.

The Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

The history of the School dates back 430 years to the revival of the 'Haute Ecole d'Equitation' at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th centuries, as the Renaissance was sweeping through the royal courts of Europe. Horses of Spanish origin were chosen over other breeds for characteristics they possessed which made them especially suitable for classical training. Archduke Maximilian started to breed Spanish horses in Austria in around 1562.

The date of the foundation of the Riding School in Vienna is taken from documents written in 1572, but the wars against Turkey in the 17th century took their toll on a part of the Riding School, and reconstruction work began in 1685. Charles VI began building work afresh and the building we know today was completed in 1735.

First of all, ignore the other answerer, because she has no idea what she's talking about- not all of the riders at the Spanish Riding School are men, because dressage is a sport in which men and women participate equally. As to how you get hired and become a rider there, I believe that you actually must live in Austria and go to school there ( they have equestrian schools which offer degrees in Austria and most European countries, unlike in the US) and be an Austrian citizen or national. It also helps to have been or to be a dressage rider or competitor, preferably starting when one is very young. Most of the countries in Europe also offer pony classes in dressage at their shows, but that idea is only just beginning to catch on in the States.

Riders have to go through a formal interview process, and then they spend a lot of time taking lessons before they are allowed to work with or train horses on their own, or ride in the public performances. The Spanish Riding School also has a tour group which goes on the road for months at a time every year, and membership in this is also by audition only.

They are open daily from 10:00 to 12:00 is the morning exercise and 14:00, 15:00 & 16:00 is the guided tour. Performances are on Saturdays and Sundays. Prices range from €116 per adult to €24 for adults standing. Tickets for performances can be booked online.
