Tech School!?
Skiles

Okay a friend of mine is considering going back to school.

He's got a 4 year degree but has found there isn't really any job he can get with his liberal arts degree(they always want you to have 2 years of experience)..
So he's thinking about going to tech school. You know where you go to school for 6 months or so and they teach you skills you get certified in, I really don't know how else to explain it....
But MY question is has anyone had a good experience with these Tech Skill Schools??? What kind of skills are the best to specialize in??
Have you made a good living and in what line of work?? Thank you very much for any help.
Oh and if you are comfortable, please explain how much it cost you to finish with a certificate or "degree", and how long you were in tech school AND how much do you typically make in an average year? Thanks again :)

I went to tech school for year and a half.. earned an associates.. have all the basic certs and been working as a lan admin for 5 years.

i enjoyed the classes, but imho not worth the thousands of dollars of money.

i recommend going to community college and take classes for the certs you are interested in.

I also prefer self study.. buy books. if you're tech savvy, then this is a good choice.. saves alot of money, time..

What's the difference between tech school and university degrees?
A New Page

What would be the difference in getting a degree from some tech school as opposed to a university? There has to be some benefit of going to university... the way it seems now when I research it is all propaganda. If all is true that I read about tech schools, why would anybody go to university? Is it just as easy to get a job with a degree from a tech school as a university? ANY information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Going to a college for four years is going to give you a Bachelors Degree. A tech school isn't. A Bachelors degree in any major is going to require core classes in all subjects. Employers are going to know a person with a Bachelors degree is going to be well rounded.. A tech school will give you more of a specific training. Having a Bachelors is going to give you more options and opportunities. Many jobs require a Bachelors. Like being a teacher, accountant, which is why most students choice an university.

How does Tech School work in the Air Force?
Banner Welcome

So in tech school do you go to learn and master the job you were assigned too or what happens? What kinda degree do you get? Like an associates degree or what? And after your done with tech school can you still be taking classes for other jobs which you can cross train or how does everything work... Can someone please help?

Tech school is broken down like this. The school itself is a basic introduction to your AF related job. The course counts toward Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) credits. When you get to your first duty station you will get 18 months of on the job training (OJT) while you are doing your OJT you are also doing a correspondence course called Career Development Course (CDCs). After you complete your OJT and CDCs you can start taking college course. MOST classes that you take in the AF count toward college credits. Save all your certificates.

How long will Tech School need to be for my wife to get stationed with me?
Obsolescence

Hi, I am getting ready to join the Air Force. I have talked to a couple different recruiters and got two different answers. I am married with a child. Once I finish Basic i'll go straight to Tech school and am trying to figure out hwo long tech school would need to be for my wife to get stationed if any of you know that would be great. Thanks in advance!

A minimum of 20 weeks at the same school.

If you have multiple schools on the same base ( which alot of AFSC's do )

IE: Electronic school then Avionics school

One of those schools must be longer than 20 weeks.

Not the two schools added together.

There are very few Tech Schools longer than 20 weeks.

Can I go straight to a Vet Tech school right after high school?
Jessica Ironing

I want to become a vet tech in Pittsburgh vet tech. I love animals and i've always wanted to do this. But do I need to go to a reagular collage before I can go to the Vet Tech school?
If so, why? And what would I have to take to be able to go into the Vet Tech school?

Thank you so much!

No. You should be able to get into tech school with no college credit beforehand. They might require a few hours of experience shadowing a vet before they will admit you though and they might have specific high school courses that they want you to take. This should be listed on the school's website though.

  • How much time off AFTER tech school? | Tech Off | Forums | Channel 9

Your name implies you're born in 1988, which implies you're 22, which means you'd be graduating Higher Education this spring (congrats, btw).

...so are you currently employed or what? Your post doesn't say. Schools, universities, and colleges certainly don't allow time off for weddings (a couple in my year got married last year, they did it all on a weekend) and corporations generally have the same opinion: it's not like getting sick, getting married is something you opt for, why should the company let you have that for free (and make your coworkers pick up your work)?

Alas no, this is exactly what the time-bank or vacation days are for. If you're graduating now-ish then you'd be a recent hire, and I don't think a company would take too kindly to hiring a fresh graduate only to hear him ask for time off straight away (this is exactly what happened in the first episode of Frasier). So even though you do get vacation days, it would be a really poor move to use them straight away.
