Contemplating a mid life career switch and I'm wondering how legit are these trucking schools
and how long do you have to wait in line for $30K+ an year once you graduate.
Any truckers out there?

It's not difficult at all, as long as you can get the money to pay for it. These truck driver schools will teach a monkey to move a truck from point A to point B and get them a CDL and even help them get a job. That's why there are so many "truck drivers" out there, that can't back into a dock or parking space, can't figure out where they are going using a map, don't have a clue what they need on the road, etc,etc and think they will get rich at $30K a year. That's also the reason why seasoned truck drivers can't make a decent wage.

Or do you need to be National first? If so, how long do you have drive cross-country until you can be local truck driver?

Well, yes, you can ask for local, but, you're the low man on the totem pole, so you get the last pick.

There are far fewer truck driving schools than law schools and so it might be tougher to get in, but truck drivers perform a useful positive role in society and can be proud of what they do compared with lawyers.

let's use common sense and logic here! truck driving school VS law school? geez!!! which one is more difficult to gain acceptance ???!!!!


truck driving school - HS diploma needed or less

law school - HS diploma + a 4year college degree

If the school is eligible for Federal student aid, yes. Otherwise, no.

Note: Mark S is well behind the times and is confusing the rules on deduction of education and training costs as a business expense. If the school qualifies for Federal student aid you can use the tuition to qualify for the Hope Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit, or the Tuition Deduction as appropriate. Many truckdriving schools DO qualify for Federal student aid though not all do.
