Thanks for the links....I will pass them on. Have you also tried Classmates.com? It is not 100% free, but a pretty good source for connecting with high school mates.
ok so I got a 981 on the entrance exam for Lane and Northside. I didn't get into Northside, but I got into the Lane Alpha Program. I also got into Von Steuben's scholar's program and I'm going there.
now i really regret my decision. i go to a private school now (like 200 kids) and so im really worried. any advice? can i have a VS "insiders" opinion?
Why do you regret your decision? If you go to a small school now, Lane might have been completely overwhelming for you; it's a big school even for kids who are used to bigger schools than yours. Von has a history of excellent scores in its Scholar's program, a great band program, nice kids, it's small enough that you won't get "lost the cracks," and tons of extra curricular activities to choose from. It may not be the fanciest school in the city and like many city schools be a little rough around the edges, but its a solid pick. I didn't attend myself but know kids who have and they have all been satisfied.
The whole HS application system is intense and stupid, and can make you second-guess and doubt. Embrace your choice! You are part of what will make your high school sink or swim, so be positive.
Besides whitney young and northside. They have to be public. Also, are taft high school and Von steuben good schools?
What about Walter Payton? or Lane Tech & Jones? Those are the selective enrollment schools along with Whitney & Northside. Taft is okay. If you want to do good there, then you HAVE to their IB program because that's what they're known for. & I think Von is good too. Oh, and Lincoln Park IB or Double Honors is supposed to be really good from what I've heard.

USDA Blog » Touring Healthy Schools in Chicago
Last month, I joined USDA’s Audrey Rowe and Christie Vilsack, wife of USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, to check out some of the interesting things nutrition staff have done in some of the Second City’s schools.
Our first stop in what turned out to be an action-packed day was McPherson Elementary School on the northwest side. According to CPS staff, McPherson’s students are more alert and better prepared to learn because they receive a breakfast at school. While visiting this beautiful, historic school, Audrey and Christie chatted with children enjoying breakfast in the classroom and then moved to the brightly painted cafeteria.
In the cafeteria, we found a number of healthy foods, including nutritious cereal bars made with USDA commodity foods. Audrey and Christie held an impromptu roundtable with the school principal, CPS nutrition services staff, and local leaders involved with farm to school and healthy school efforts.
It was also pretty cool to learn that a relationship between nearby FamilyFarmed.org and CPS’ food service vendor will result in around $2 million of school food being sourced from local Midwest farms.
