June 11, 2009, 11:42 pmThere is a warning from the Ministry of Health that more than a million New Zealanders could end up getting swine flu.
The World Health Organisation has declared the H1N1 virus to be the 21st century's first pandemic. It is particularly concerned at how rapidly it's spreading in Australia.
New Zealand health officials now say a community outbreak is inevitable and predict the virus will afflict the country for months.
Deputy Director of Pubic Health Dr Darren Hunt says it is possible 30 percent of the population could get the virus.
"Because most of the population's not immune, it will spread quite rapidly and a larger proportion of the population will get it. We don't know exactly how many, but the estimates of 20 to 30 percent would not be surprising."
Dr Hunt says the infection rate would be spread over a period of time, so it would not be the case that 30 percent of the country would have swine flu at the same time.
The latest figures have 30 people confirmed infected, 10 further probable cases and 288 people in isolation.
During a similar outbreak in the 1970s, US health authorities instituted a mass vaccination programme - however the vaccine had side effects for some people and deaths were recorded.
Dr Hunt says that is being considered in the context of a vaccination programme here.
"Yes vaccination is a very real strategy that we're looking at, because it can potentially protect large numbers of people. But we take the issues of safety very seriously still."
Parents are being told there is no need to cancel overseas travel plans for next month's school holidays. The Ministry of Health says people who return from overseas, and are well, do not need to be routinely excluded from work or school.
The Maritime Union will ask employers to pay workers sent home due to swine flu quarantines. Secretary Trevor Hanson is worried about waterside workers who may come in contact with the virus through crews on cargo vessels. He says the crew on the Cook Strait ferries are particularly at risk as they are in constant contact with travellers.
Mr Hanson says even short periods of missed wages can be serious for low income workers and employers. He not only wants them to continue to be paid if they are quarantined, but says employers should assisted them to get household supplies delivered.

oh no omg im so scared now!! I know in australia they are also in fear too, but that means im gonna get swine!!!
this is not a rant at all, this is a news report, Ive just pasted the text from the website with the source (duh) and I live in NZ its small
Ok well in the text it says that it is POSSIBLE that 30 or 20% of the population will get it but that doesn't mean that it WILL happen. Don't freak out just wash your hands often and stay away from sick people and you will survive this so called "Apocalypse"
If you could help with any of the questions bellow that'd be great. I forgot my text book at school and it's due tomorrow. This is not cheating as it's not a test.. It's just some science homework and any help is awesome!
1 What is the difference between electron flow and conventional current?
2 Explain the difference between static electricity and current electricity.
3 A circuit contains a 3.0 V battery and a light bulb. Suppose the battery were replaced by a 6.0 V battery. Would the electrical energy transformed in the light bulb increase or decrease? Use the example of a waterside to explain your answer.
4 Explain how electrons are ‘pushed’ through a conductor without having to touch other electrons.
5 Explain how two conductors could have different current even through the electrons in each conductor are traveling at the same speed.
1. Electrons flow from the negative terminal to the positive terminal. However, we usually think of current as flowing in the opposite direction, from positive to negative. So, electrons flow in the opposite direction of "conventional" current.
2. Static electricity is the accumulation of charge (electrons). They don't go anywhere, but just accumulate in one location. With current electricity, electrons flow from one place to another, presumably performing some task we find useful.
3. There'd be more energy transformed in the light bulb. If current flow is like water flowing down a waterslide, then voltage would be represented by the height of the slide. Just as water falling down a 6-ft slide dissipate more energy than water falling down a 3-ft slide, electrons falling through a 6 V potential give up more energy than electrons falling through a 3 V potential.
4. Electrons repel each other in free space, and rarely touch. If you stuff electrons into one end of a conductor, they will flow away from each other just as they do in free space. The difference is that they'll find it easier to move along the length of the conductor than in any other direction. So, as you put more electrons in one end, you "push" electrons through the conductor to the other end.
5. More current = more flow. If you just doubled the number of flowing electrons at the same speed, you'd also double the current flowing through the conductor. It's like a river...the total flow is the total amount of water flowing in the river. A river the size of the Mississippi flowing at 1 mph has more flow (current) than a small creek flowing at the same speed.

The Tyranny Of Perfection
Excellence is achievable perfection is not, so seek excellence.
Striving for that which is unachievable will ultimately demoralize and crush the seeker. The expectation of perfection is a cruel master as nothing will ever be good enough. Sometimes “good enough” is actually good enough.
To often the standards that we set for ourselves are so high they lead to a permanent sense of failure, but what is worse is when we expect perfection of others.
Is it wrong to have high standards? Not at all, but, the standards have to be achievable, there has to be an ongoing celebration of achievements along the path. The level of the standards should always rise, but for some there is a point to which they will not be able to improve. This does not mean that person (or yourself) should be rejected, what it means that they (you) should encourage people still on the journey to get to the standard you have achieved. Become the encourager of those who can progress further.
